Normal sized FAAH workunits are being sent out now.

I hope normal size are coming out now as stated by knreed.
Judging from the two assignments that I got - one at 25% complete and one at 50% complete, it looks like 9-10 hours jobs instead of the 14-15 hours job. It used to take 6-7 hours on my system. |

The workunits will run fine - our scripts to produce the workunits originally generated these workunits with a duration of 1-2 hours. We have apparently resized them too high. Just let them run and they will complete correctly. We will work on getting the sizing back to 8 hours. Actually, these workunits were beautifully sized! ![]() ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Papa3 at Apr 25, 2008 9:24:00 PM] |

The downside of Sekerob's 4 suggestions for keeping your computer running a bit cooler in summer (and all other times too) is that you'd end up crunching significantly fewer WUs. If and only if you're technically savvy and/or adventurous and your relationship with the computer owner permits, I can think of a couple of other options.
----------------------------------------Without spending any money, you may be able to reduce the voltage(s) supplied to the CPU and other components. You may or may not have to reduce the computer speed a little too, which would reduce your crunching speed, but you'd achieve your cooling with a smaller speed reduction this way. After the laughter stops, you might get useful advice from overclockers' fora (1 forum, 2 fora). The other approach requires spending money on hardware to improve your computer's cooling. This option may not be available on Macs, and for notebooks the best you could do would be to get a notebook cooler pad or even leave the machine in the breeze of a desktop fan. For PC-style machines I'd start by upgrading the CPU heatsink and fan. The test results at [url=http://www.frostytech.com/top5heatsinks.cfm] Frostytech.com may be a useful guide. Don't forget ventilation and airflow inside the case. Warnings: Running a non-standard CPU cooler may void the CPU warranty. You must use thermal grease - just a very thin layer - between the CPU cap (heatspreader) and the heatsink. If the paste is silver, do not get it on any of the CPU connecting pins or any parts of the motherboard as it conducts electricity and may cause a short-circuit. If the heatsink is big and heavy, your motherboard will be vulnerable to damage if the computer is jolted, so remove the HS if the computer is to be transported by unknown persons! Happy crunching. ---------- As for the longer FAAH WUs - who cares if they're longer, provided you can return them in time. Getting the research done is the bottom line, not points awarded or absolute no of WUs done. (I'm looking at this thread only because I wondered whether something in my machine had slowed it down.) This thread has been all over the spectrum, but back on topic, I've had a number of normal (8 hours) since a few days.
----------------------------------------Just now seeing FA@H version 6.04 coming through on windows which probably is an update to cater for the limited number of fails knreed reported v.v a particular 'null' condition.

13 hours + on most computers here. My fastest computer (AMD X2 3.45GHz) is showing a FAAH with 11.5 hours so far at 6.6% with 18.5 hours remaining. The machine was rebooted recently, and the workunit does not appear to be stuck as the percentage is slowly incrementing. Graphics is displaying correctly. The FAAH workunit in the other partition looks more typical: 2.5 hours elapsed at 28% with 6.5 hours remaining. A slower AMD 2.4GHz has one with 3.5 hours at 24% with 10.5 hours remaining. 7.5 hours on my clovers and app 7 hours on the Q6600 at 3600mhz. You need some faster machines my friend! ![]() ![]() |

Anyone got any 6.04 WU's? (Says about 16 hours, my last 6.03 one estimated 10 hours).

No, on my mashines I still run 6.03... Any how, as far as I understood, it's only a matter of the grafical interface, so there seems to be no change in the core, and no change in the length of the calculation time...
Correct me, when I'm wrong... ![]() |

Hi there. if I were to buy a brand new pc with one of these dual core processor things, how long would each work unit take? EG, the last work unit I did took about 17 hours on my p3.2ghz with 1gb ram, so if I ran it on one of the really new machines, how long would it have taken?

They will run faster than the project average which on yesterday´s production was 10 hours (graph up in this thread). One poster wrote a little up in here, that his machines did 7 to 7.5 hours.... mine does 8 but I don't overclock. Best place to look for advise is the Chat Room where some threads are running on the best configurations.
----------------------------------------As for 6.03-6.04 that was only a bug fix. Actually have both running side by side this moment. They are compatible, which is why WCG did not have to drain the work before starting the circulation of the new version.
