The DDD-T and FAAH queues are being drawn down in advance of the new version being beta tested now. Watch your queue closely. If you can't get any beta workunits, DDD-T workunits, FAAH workunits or AC@H workunits, it might be time to accept workunits from other projects to keep your computer busy. Since my queue was deficient, I got a few HCC and HPF2 in reserve this morning.
----------------------------------------Beta work is checked/ticked in a separate area, but it behaves similarly to AC@H. In other words, there's not much out there. Once DDD-T and FAAH work starts flowing again, take off the check/tick mark to process DDD-T and/or FAAH only if you desire.

If no problems are encountered in beta testing, it shouldn't take too long. The techs are reluctant to give exact dates. All I can assume is to watch the project mix for at least the next week.
----------------------------------------The caution above is well advised. I used to do HPF2 on dialup, but I had a 2nd phone line at the time. It had little impact on BOINC. The serial nature of UD meant that anyone doing it that way would have to wait for the download to finish before the workunit would start.

1) Does anyone have an informed estimate of how long the FaaH workunit drought will last? 2) The HPF2 project software is a 22+MB download ![]() Both figures are incorrect as those are uncompressed sizes. The compressed sizes are less than half. ALSO and more importantly, it's one time only for as long as no new version of the science is released! BOINC and WCG have for longer used 'on the fly' compression. That works from BOINC 5.10.xx for both down and upload. Hi Papa3,
BOINC reports uncompressed file sizes. I don't know how much smaller the compressed files are, but they will be big enough to monopolize a dial-up for a long time. Lawrence |

What did you think I did when compiling the matrix Papa3? Like Lawrence said, the transfer window is deceiving as it shows the space the files occupy after they have been decompressed (comment added to table).
----------------------------------------The HPF2 files I just put thru the lesser 7-Zip and compact to 10.7mb. Gz used by BOINC/WCG is better. Some dial-up for whatever reason acts weird when receiving compressed files and wastes time on trying to compress on transmission what is already compressed instead of just dead-head transmitting. Fortunately it's 1 time on enrolling to the project, when updated and if a project reset is done as all WCG project files are then erased. Cant change that. A future BOINC version will have a download budget control. It will look how much a client permits in periodic download/upload volume and allocate jobs on the basis of that. How this is going to work when a profile is set to do the bigger projects, I do not know at this time. ciao [added: copy of matrix with comment added to point 11.]

The relevant fact here is that HPF2's project software download ties up a dialup line for TWO HOURS. The HPF2 project is therefore inappropriate for dialup users.
HCC's project software downloaded in just under 15 minutes, which is high but still tolerable. The new FaaH software also downloaded in less than 15 minutes. HPF2 should either reduce the size of its bloated software, or openly admit that it is certainly NOT an appropriate project for dialup users! |

Point 11a highlights a special HPF2 feature. It works particularly well for those on HPF2 only.
----------------------------------------HCC's project software downloaded in just under 15 minutes, which is high but still tolerable. It must though be said that if a 15 minutes download to get the science software(update) is 'tolerable', the standards of acceptability are tight. I downloaded HPF2 in December when on 56k dial up when discovering all the other extra's to make it an optimal. Added to that were the extended computing times to improve the average download to run time ratio. Though it was a longer download, it was far away from what you have experienced. We're sorry for that negative impression. Personally I could not possibly judge this extreme complex piece of software if it can be / should be considered bloatware. WCG and the Scientists take extreme care in minimizing sizes not to 'take' the bandwidth ad-lib. This is why also the budget feature is being developed, so automation can be applied for those on a tight connection. Anyway, your comments are noted. thanks for contributing to WCG.
