Hi all, I would like to ask more agressivity and confidence from you in all WCG crunchers about its resources available in anywhere, anyplace. I would like to suggest you open the mind and aloow all players download AfricanClimate WU's to run, despite of yours level of connectivity. I used to run a old one participant in another climate project, called ClimaPrediction (there is this project under BOINC too), and ever download a lot of data to run for many weeks, months if necessary, and do it very well and with proud to help determine better knowledge about Climate... each WU's from ClimaPrediction can reached around 120-360 MB in size to download and upload, and using a basic internet connection with 40-70 Kbps speed. I can download/run/upload in very well basis it in affordable time. Think about it... Try the same with the ClimaPrediction to conmfirm my position... learn about it... Based on this comparation just mentioned above (with ClimaPrediction project, that is a more expensive and hard project than yours AfricanClimate), I can't believe that the limitation that you impose about internet connection speed are fair for all WCG players, and ask you to review it and open the downloads for all. I can't agree with this limitation once I have evidences that it was a mistake. So, I ask you to cancel this limitation, and open for all WCG players run the AfricanClimate project that need be acellerated and improved asap (To Help you) with a lot of new players running WU's candly for you (and for free...). Do you don't need speed up your project ? Do you don't have interest in post a challenge for AfricanClimate project addressed for all WCG players ? What yours concern about it ? Be aware, open mind and be wise oppenning the limits ! Best Regards. Giba.
Cheers ! GIB@

No. AfricanClimate@Home is already running as fast as it can, in spite of the connection speed restriction.
There are more than enough people who qualify for ACH work. There just isn't enough ACH work to go around. |

Hi Giba,
----------------------------------------Wonderful, but AC@H phase 1 is nearly finished and at 82 work units per cycle (init distro 10 to make it 820 total), there is little to consider a change with thousands of members meeting the min.restrictions and competing to get them as part of the 1.6-2.0 million work units that WCG sends out for the sum of it's projects over the same period a single AC@H cycle takes. As for the size, i ran a few CPDN and never seen a download size of 360mb.... maybe including all the upload trickles spread over months, like 80 or 160 per model. The WCG version is 72mb, compressed download and like 130mb, compressed upload. With hypothetical unlimited availability, if you were to run that on a quad, you'd incur 16x130mb upload daily if they were not being chopped up the way they're being chopped to minimize bandwidth upload bottlenecks.... try squeezing that through a 40kbps line, where upload speed is probable at a lower rate. As for how phase II is going to be managed we don't know. The admin just shared that it is expected to be quite different, but nothing at all as how that would take shape.

Hey Sekerob, thank for your return. So in this way I think that unfortunatelly I and some thousand people will never contribute for AfricanClimate project. Maybe next phase the requiremets could be more simple. Regards.

We think that there will be more work available in the next phase, depending on the results the scientists see from this phase.

So in this way I think that unfortunatelly I and some thousand people will never contribute for AfricanClimate project. If you really want to crunch AC@H WUs without having the required bandwidth, there are workarounds available to mimic the bandwidth required. After stopping the BOINC client, just edit the file client_state.xml with a text editor to change the values of <bwup> and <bwdown>. Make sure you have a value more than 85000 in <bwdown>. Start BOINC. To see other ideas which crunchers tried see this topic. |

Hi Bijoalex, great tips !
----------------------------------------Thank you very much for your input triyng help me in this batlle. I just do it, now I'm praying to get some ACH WU's... I read that the probability is very low despite of this efforts... But I'm prepared now to get it. Thank you in advance for your amazing and useful help. Regards. Giba.

Hi, you are right the size e CP project reach this values only with the way described for you. But it not invalidated my point. Small WU are more easy to run and more quickly than huge ones. I understod the project deliverables and premisses, and limitations. But I just intend help the project with my request. Best regards and thank you for your input and help. Giba.

With each file download, BOINC gradually brings down the <bwdown> value to the actuals. So you need to periodically check the client_state.xml to ensure that it doesn't fall below the 85000 mark.

Hi everyone. I'm not very computer savvy. Could someone tell me the steps to edit the file client_state.xml? Thanks!
