We have carefully reviewed your records and regret that we cannot offer you admission to UC Davis. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry to hear that Blizze. One down but several more to come and some of those will be good news. I took the crazy route back in my day. Applied to one college under their early decision program at the time. Arranged an on-site interview with the admissions folks. Gives you a chance to make yourself stand out more and, while they don't necessarily admit any concerns about you, they have a perfect chance to ask questions about them and get answers they wouldn't otherwise have. Kind of hard to interview you without asking questions and the logical thing is to clear up their concerns. Took the same path with grad school and did the same thing. Worked both times too. To be perfectly honest, your undergraduate school doesn't really matter that much. It's four years of partying your @$$ off, experimenting with illicit narcotics, swilling beer, and chasing tail (not even kidding a little). Then you apply to grad school and that's when it starts to matter. Many paths lead to greatness, but some allow more time for fun along the way. Wow, no wonder one in four teen girls is infected with an STD these days. You're right Jonathan, it doesn't matter.....until you're done and trying to get a job. Having that piece of paper then determines where you go into the stack of applicants. Guess that's not so important in a job market where demand far outstrips supply and employers are begging for people. Hmm...when was the last time that happened? So, despite the fact that having that piece of paper doesn't really mean you have any real skills, or knowledge for that matter, those that have one go to the top of the heap. Then you get further sorted on your GPA. A tenth, if not hundredth, of a point can determine if you get an entry level job with the company you want. Oh yea, folks these days supposedly switch jobs a lot more than in my day. Strange how the folks doing the hiring still see lots of job switching as a red flag. Getting a job is just like getting into college. You're selling yourself and trying to stand out from all the competition. I guess if money is not a concern for you, you have a big network of family friends you can count on to give you a job when you need one, college doesn't matter at all. Yea, some fields are competitive enough that undergrad doesn't matter in the sense that you have to finish grad school to have a chance. But then there's that pesky matter of getting IN to grad school. College is no different from the rest of life. You get out of it what you put in to it. |

Maybe staying around home in a CSU isn't that bad of an idea. I think $30 an hour is calling for me at AT&T. ![]() [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 14, 2008 2:03:52 PM] |

I wouldn't be where I am today if I hadn't done well in college. But college isn't like high school. It doesn't reward a slavish work-ethic and attention to piles of meaningless time wasting homework. Instead, it rewards intelligent thinking, cogent analysis, and mental acuity. Of course, if you're smart enough, you'll have plenty of time for that along with all the partying you can handle. |

I'm not saying that it has no relevance - I'm just saying that the particular place you happen to go doesn't matter. Of course your success in college matters. The particular college you go to isn't totally irrelevant. The HR folks that tend to do the recruiting know the schools they go to. They are much more likely to know the differences between one school and another. Folks in general though tend to have a limited familiarity with the schools in that part of the country. When it comes to west coast colleges, I know about Stanford, USC and UCLA and would put Stanford at the top of those three. Truth is though that there are bound to be certain departments that are better at USC or UCLA. West coast recruiters will not only know that, they'll know the other places just as well. So if you're job hunting on the west coast, you're much more likely to run into folks who DO know the difference. Come east and their lack of familiarity could work against you unless you've been through one of the schools out there with the national reputation. |
