Hey Everyone,
Interesting things going on over here. JC got me all excited about crunching again, and I have some new hardware to play with (including a RAD 7850 that will be shipping out soon). I thought I'd share some very interesting results. Here's the breakdown: Nordic PC Odin Core i7 3930K (4.6GHz, 6 cores, 12 threads, quad-channel DDR3-1600) EVGA NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680 Signature 2 avg points: 74,411 per day over past 2 days Nordic PC Thor Core i5 3570K (4.5GHz, 4 cores, 4 threads, dual-channel DDR3-1600) XFX Double-D Radeon 7850 2GB avg points: 81,652 per day over past 3 days I know these are very small sample sizes, but it's really impressive to me how a little quad-core with a mid-sized Radeon can beat the six-core with a high-end NVIDIA card in this benchmark. I'm sure with more tuning the samples would be a little different also, but I can certainly testify that if you're crunching, you need a Radeon 7-series card. Thanks JC! |

The NVIDIA 680 or 600 series cards are not ideal for crunching HCC GPU since NVIDIA for whatever the reason crippled, yes I mean crippled, the double math floating point precision feature as compared to the 500 series cards. Please refer to this link for additional information and FP64 is the feature being discussed AnandTech Comparision review. This is process is needed (more like required) to maximize results for HCC GPU. Plus NVIDIA cards are more geared for CUDA processing rather than OpenCL as CUDA is what NVIDIA caters to. OpenCL is supported in NVIDIA cards, however from my casual observations is more of an accommodation as NVIDIA desires CUDA processing. I cannot tell you how frustrating it is to see a 680 card process tasks slower than a 580 card. If you are interested to crunch HCC GPU, stay with AMD cards. Please note, AMD have their own exceptions but for HCC crunching purposes you are better off with AMD 7-series card. You can still crunch and get great results with the NVIDIA cards, but if you are getting a new card and crunching HCC GPU is your objective, you are better off with AMD over NVIDIA. Both NVIDIA and AMD have their issues, ATI/AMD has had its historical (current?) fair share of poor software and driver support. Based upon my recent experiences, current AMD drivers crash more frequently and need some baby sitting as compared to NVIDIA drivers. Remember, neither is perfect as they both have their histories and issues. |
