Boas, Co-Captains (fellow Team Mates)!
----------------------------------------![]() There are now *over* 29,000 Teams at the WCG. Please help me! Ok, I am getting patient about getting an upgraded GPU in my current PC that I use for work. It's a tad old yet it has been rock solid. I just want a GPU that will fit on my mobo without having to do anything other than un-screw present GPU and then insert a much newer one. Perhaps just a single GPU as I only have a 650 power supply. Something that is known to run cool and quiet (or very close to that). Any suggestions? Seriously I need hel and I don't want to post in any of thw WCG threads because the answers range from "try this" to those that are way off thread. @ Johnny Cool. What is your budget for a new GPU? Anything with-in reason. I used to own a VooDoo PC, (they were made in Calgary, Canada) which were very expensive PC's (like Falcon PC). Yet that was then, when we had plentiful high paying Software Engineering / Senior SW Architect and so on) positions to recruit for. ![]() I am more concerned with the simplicity (I just want to screw it in place and plug it in) of my mobo). That is more important to me. Thx, Nano! I very much appreciate you helping me. ![]() |

You could spend anywhere from about $100 for an HD 7770 to $350+ for an HD 7970. If you're doing this to run the HCC GPU app you might not want to too much because there is no telling how much longer those WUs will be available or if there will be any more WCG GPU apps in the future. There are other medically related projects that you can run on graphics cards when WCG is done so that may also be something you'd want to consider. If you can give me what your "within reason" price range would be I can make some suggestions.

I think I can find other uses (other than computer -related purchases) like helping a family member get a new lawn mower in the Spring. And I don't want to presume that the IT recruiting will pick up (to my satisfaction) any time real soon. Well then, that HD 7770 is starting to look more wise financially considering the factors. Thanks Nano, 'tis better to be fiscally conservative in this day and age. I'll just wait for a recommendation from you (and perhaps some config advise as well should I go ahead with this. ![]() |

Thanks Nano, 'tis better to be fiscally conservative in this day and age. I'll just wait for a recommendation from you (and perhaps some config advise as well should I go ahead with this. Here are some suggestions: Diamond Research - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103205 ($20 rebate) MSI - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127678 ($10 rebate) Most powerful card of the list with a core clock of 1100Mhz. Afterburner overclocking is an excellent OC utility. Asus - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121663 ($10 rebate) XFX -http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150598 ($20 rebates) All rebate information is current as of 1/31/2013 posting, and this is not a solicitation for any product. The above cards should work well with your 600w power supply and not cause undue strain on your computer as the minimum power requirement for these cards is 450w. This is really a question of which video card manufacturer you prefer, as people tend to prefer one vendor over another for various reasons. For me, EVGA for NVIDIA video cards and my previous AMD favorite is no longer competitive. Everyone will have their own opinions both positive and negative. For me, that would be HIS and Sapphire AMD video cards who are both absent from this list. All of the cards mentioned above are well known entities. Best of luck to you JC on your final decision. |
