Internet connections aren't so contended. Taking your most extreme example, that's about the length of time it might take someone to check their email and read the news headlines.
To put this in perspective, many web pages are larger than just a single FightAIDS@Home work unit. FightAIDS@Home was suitable for dialup 3 years ago when WCG launched it, and it is still suitable today. |

On dial-up, you cannot check email or news headlines while BOINC is uploading. Your email page or news page will not finish loading until BOINC is done with the network.
Some web pages do take a long time to load on dialup - but dialup users avoid those web pages. What exactly is the cost of bulking up Faah jobs with more work? Isn't it zero, or close to it? If so, why not pack at least 12 hours of work into each work unit? |
