Nice work Blizzie! You're halfway to becoming a MOT millionaire. That should happen about this time next month. The second million will hit about tax day.
----------------------------------------Anyone have any thoughts on what you'd like to see our goals be for this year? I've thrown out some thoughts but would like some imput from everyone. Do you want another goal for the year? What about other goals during the year - like one on one challenges with other teams? |

Sounds like a big push. We should find some teams to get acquainted with and bring up some friendly challenges with those about equal to us. |

better still my dad is a corporate lawyer. He taught me that the easiest way to succeed is to acquire someone better at a low cost. Let's work on gaining new members on our way to 60 million. A noble goal in any event.

Thanks Keith! Thanks Dave! I see you across the horizon Keith.. Come on down! Looking at early March at this point I'd say. No idea about the goal. 60-70 million? Sounds like a big push. We should find some teams to get acquainted with and bring up some friendly challenges with those about equal to us. better still my dad is a corporate lawyer. He taught me that the easiest way to succeed is to acquire someone better at a low cost. Let's work on gaining new members on our way to 60 million. A noble goal in any event. JPF Gobble them before they gobble you. Interesting.... Recruiting new members is definitely a priority. The one thing we can count on is change. That means we'll lose members over time. The question is always how fast or slow that happens. Losing members doesn't mean we're doing something wrong necessarily. Some folks just quit crunching, others change jobs and can't keep crunching for some reason, there's lots of normal situations where we can lose a member and these aren't things we can do much about. Members with interests that change is one that we may be able to influence but not prevent. The big thing is to not do thing(s) that drive folks away of course. I realize things change for folks and I won't lay a guilt trip on someone who wants to do something else but I still hate to see anyone leave. That still leaves us with the need to keep bringing in new members regardless. That's how we grow, plain and simple. All of you joined this team as opposed to another one for a reason. Those reasons will likely appeal to someone else as well. I'm trying to move us in a direction over the long term that will increase our opportunities to recruit new members but getting new members is something we can all work on. It is by no means an easy task. I'll be the first to admit that but every member makes a difference. As for our goal for 2008, first, we don't HAVE to have one. That IS an option. In choosing one, we want one that is reasonable but is still a stretch and not a given to meet. My initial thought was something like 55 million. That's a 10 percent increase over last year's. Last year, we made and beat our goal but did it very late in the year. Now we don't want a goal that we'll meet 3-4 months before the year ends either. At the same time, there always seems to be a drop off in the summertime (Northern that is) plus we have folks that are expecting to scale back due to heat issues with their machines. But this is what makes it interesting too if we're going to set a goal. I'd want to go with at least 55 million or not have a goal this year. I would expect 60 million to prove to be a definite stretch for us. However, if we gain some new members, that could be increasingly reachable. We don't see much loss point-wise so far from losing UD folks. However, UD is still a choice, albeit not the default, on the download page when you join WCG. In the announcement of the end of UD, the admins said: Elements of the migration plan are as follows: UD Platform: 1. World Community Grid’s two active projects, FightAIDS@Home and Human Proteome Folding 2, will continue to run on UD (in addition to BOINC). 2. Our plan is to run these projects on UD at least through the end of 2007 but no later than mid-2008. 3. No new projects will be available on the UD platform. 4. Before the end of October 2007, we plan to remove UD as one of the registration options. Well, clearly #4 hasn't happened. Turns out, it could be in the middle of the summer (#2) before we actually see the real impact of losing our UD-only members - when we'll likely be seeing a slowdown already. Much of that impact will be decided by how many switch to BOINC before then. So, we have a number of unknowns that could make either goal - 55 or 60 million - easy or hard. I'm willing to go with either. So, think it over and weigh in here with your choice. |

Did some quick looking for possible candidates for one on one team challenges - points-wise that is. It's a bit tough finding a team that is a good match. Not many have a thread here, then there's figuring out if it would be a fair match. Some teams have a widely varying output. Here's my short list:
----------------------------------------Christians The Edwardians BOINC@AUSTRALIA Teddies ___In2My.Net___ Christians would be a stretch for us. Edwardians look to be the best match. We might be a bit of a stretch for In2My.Net but they're an active team and, after all, neither us nor the other team would really lose. A big question would be how long to run the challenge? Two weeks, four weeks, longer? Your thoughts? |
