Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Hi gretchch, and welcome to the team! That's a nice new piece of hardware you're crunching with! I'll have to keep an eye on you back there. wink

Of course, one of the main reasons I like Linux, especially for my file servers, is it's ability to run problem free for long periods of time. We recently shut down one of our Linux servers at the office in order to install a new piece of hardware, and were told during the boot sequence that the hard drives were going to be scanned because the machine had not been rebooted for 416 days. How many Windows machines do you know that could go that long between reboots?
Well, first you'd have to stop having bimonthly Windows security updates which require a reboot. wink

shock Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

I did some work for a customer who had (and probably still is) running a WinNT machine, which I believe hadn't been patched or rebooted for about 3 years. The guy who built it ran a lot of home-grown NT apps for the company and didn't leave much documentation. After he left, they weren't sure how critical it was to their infrastructure and thought it safer not to touch it!

worried worried worried

How it hadn't had a BSOD in that time I do not know!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Good old WinNT, aka OS/2 with a gui designed by Northern Telecom, and licensed to Microsoft. I still can't believe IBM had MS develop OS/2 at the same time they were developing MS Windows.

I still have a couple of sets of NT, I think version 4, installations disks still in the shrink wrap, if I can remember where I stored them.

I remember it was always a challenge to find drivers, but I don't remember how stable it was.

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

I'm still a fan of Win2k. You could do a full install on a 1.6 Gig drive and still have room for DC apps. Plus it was light on memory usage. If it had better wireless and multicore support, it might still be my primary OS. But enough of my aimless thoughts.

We had a great day yesterday. We scored 509,269 points which is 4th best in our entire history. It also marks the 3rd time this year where we broke the 500,000 mark. We also set a new Results Returned record for 2009 with 838 results . Great stuff, and keep those work units flowing!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

From the little known fact file.....

Yesterday we passed 18 Billion seconds of computation time. Lately we're averaging about 20 Million seconds each day, which is up more than 4 Million/day from about 6 months ago. That's basically 231 cores cranking away all day, and an addition of 46 cores in the past 6 months. I'm glad I'm not footing the bill for all of that! laughing You guys are great!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Hi All

If you've not seen this thread yet, then have a look. Dell is running a competition to find the best way to "change the world". Someone has suggested installing the WCG agent on all new computers to raise awareness and give people the opportunity to crunch who might not have found out about it otherwise.

This is the WCG campaign to vote for it until it's the top idea. We only need a few hundred votes to get it there and there are only a few days left to vote. Please have a look at this thread:
