Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

I hope you don't mind my enthusiasm as I try to pass you in the team stats in the next few days. But to catch your overall total would take a *lot* more persistance. Great crunching!

Blimey Col, that's some serious crunching going on there. You've only got another 100k or so before you hit my overall points total.

Here's a challenge though... see how long it takes you to hit my overall runtime which is fast approaching 10 years! Just goes to show some of the slow beasties I was using to crunch on in the olden days!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Thanks Matt! I've never been one to shy away from a challenge, so I'll see what I can do. I did just get my 3 year milestone today, so I'm pretty happy about that. Peering off into the distance, I can't even see 10 years, so I have lots to do. I better keep plodding along then.

On a side note, I see you do Dimes. Are you still active? I tried that out a few years ago but ended up getting a nastygram from my ISP. Oddly enough, I eventually picked up Majestic 12 which is much more bandwidth intensive, and have never heard a peep out of my ISP.

Yeah - I still keep it going. It doesn't work over my company network or when I'm on the VPN at home. I've not had any nastygrams yet, but I've recently changed ISPs so I don't know how they'll react to it?

I've only got 3 PCs running it and I reckon the works laptop only gets 12 hours a day of connectivity, so it's probably not a bit hit.

Talking of targets, I'm fast approaching 10 million measurements, which I'm quite pleased with!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Nice music Diana. I really liked "Stand Amazed".

I finally have a CEP badge, and a little closer to a Beta badge, now that CEP is available for Linux. It looks like I'll be with bronze for awhile, as I'm not getting many CEP WUs.
I'm still getting a good mix of the other projects, although I'm surprised how many FAAH WUs are passing through.

Hi Col323. I think the 'number of years' value is mostly just an indicator of how may cores you throw at Boinc. For what it's worth, the number of cores I ran my first calendar year was at least partially self-therapy trying to make up for the time I felt was wasted crunching at another location. That number has dropped due to retirement (crash & burn) of a few machines, and the lack of time trying to keep up with machines at multiple locations (some people insist on turning off every computer they find!).

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

Hi JAL2. Congratulations on your CEP badge. From looking at the project specific boards, it looks like CEP is one of the slowest running with the fewest workunits due to the amount of space the scientists have on their servers to process the data. I think that new batches tend to be used up very soon after they are released, so it's pretty much luck of the draw. Sometimes, there will be nothing and other times you stike at the right moment to hit a rich vein of WUs.

On the flip-side, FAAH is one of the highest priority projects, due to the amount of work that is required. If you've got it selected to run then you're guaranteed a good stock of FAAH work (I've done over 4 years of CPU time on it already, so have temporarily deselected it to give the other projects a chance). When I have a machine running only a low priority project such as CEP or Rice then I always keep the "send me work from other projects" option selected in case there is no work for either when I connect to the server... I think I'm guaranteed in those circumstances to get a FAAH WU to crunch through.

I've only recently signed up for Beta so I only have just over a day of CPU time against it and am therefore a while away from a bagde... but it's something else to aim for - I hope you get yours soon!

Re: Christians are giving...come give with us!

In the spirit of adding more CPU years (and since I'm bad at those letter games wink ) I fired up an ollllldd 1Ghz P3. I'll probably keep it running until the house doesn't need warming, or it officially bites the dust, whichever comes first. Of course, in the name of adding CPU time faster I'm itching to buy a shiny new quad core, but I'm under a self-imposed asset freeze.

I know exactly what you mean. I'm looking at laptops to find a replacement for my old desktop PC for which I may no longer have room. As much as I could just go for a basic model, I have my heart set on this one:

HP HDX X18-1103EA Premium Notebook PC

Mmmmm! Quad-core, Blu-ray and lots of other goodies that I probably won't need. biggrin My justification as always is that the more meaty the machine, the longer it will take to become obselete.

Sadly, I have to wait a while while I try and save some funds up (not easy right now as I'm also saving to go on Holiday at Easter) and I don't know if my Desktop will hold out until then!
