Re: Sceen saver flickers

KLiK,

One Core BOINC, other core Opera (the browser i suppose). If you think this is fit for the *set and forget* members, can you explain how to assign these cores, so that both will not run on the same core and how you can ensure it for each new science task to use the designated core. On Vista not read anywhere how to make it automatic, unless Vista is smart enough to do this automatic.

Why do you want to reserve 1 core for Opera. That's an awful lot of CPU cycles gone idle. More over, if the processing as per your suggestion is only when idle, who needs that second core reserved for Opera or any other application? Suggest in that idle processing case to just allow all cores.

Re: Sceen saver flickers

OK, i'll do my best to explain:

you have BOINC on dual CPU (or dual core) and it's automaticly set to run 2 tasks, one on each CPU/core...i noticed that when I set this option, to continue the work on crunching - it's actually doing one job, while other is set on pause/snooze (but not actually snooze, only the percenatges doesn't go up, while the first one does!)...

so the BOINC when you work, it's shuting down one or both of the cores for you - so you can work (only when this option is enabled)...while one task runs at 40% of dual CPU (in dual CPU there isn't always exact %, even though i run it on 50% CPU seting in BOINC), while other is either idle or running at miserably 10-20%...also in that time in task manager the dual CPU load isn't 100%!
also i noticed that enableing that option does speed up the system...

to answer you question about Opera...first of all I use Opera 'cause right now i have 13 tabs opened and it works nicely...try doing that to IE or Firefox, and they will crush down! also one of these is mailbox, with over 13000mails & news box...
all this is being run on an old ABIT BP6 board with 533@544 Mendoccino Celerons & with 640MB SDRAM...quite amazing, when you see that the SWAP file is about 1GB big, 'cause of the BOINC calcs...
also, there are other programs there to run on the 24/7 internet: MSN, Skype, Gtalk...not to mention the Antivirus, Firewall, Speedfan...

Re: Sceen saver flickers

KLiK, Vista systems have 1gb, often standard 2gb at purchase, so operating conditions are quite different from 640mb. I/we don't recollect all 324,000 members' system setups:

1. What means "dual CPU".... physically 2 CPU's or a dual core or C2D?
2. What OS

With what you specifically are doing in your system constraints you should indeed only run BOINC on 1 core as can be selected in the device profile. Does not answer how you designate a BOINC process to a specific CPU, automatically, and with the start of each new science task (I know how to do it manually). I do not know if OSses are smart enough to put a low priority process on a different core from other normal priority processes.

Running any browser with 13 tabs is a serious stretch. The multi-tab browsers are memory hungry and swap file intensive, so 640mb and that many tabs will land you combined with BOINC into serious VM activity and latency.

ttyl

PS. Having memory galore, allocating 256mb to video substantially improved system performance on my desktop, 6 years old now.

Huh. Speak for yourself! I regularly have dozens of tabs open in FF. There's no problem so long as I block Flash (Flash isn't polite about CPU use).

I'm running WinXP...and don't think I'll get to Vista ever...
most probably to some Linux, like Ubuntu... biggrin

dual CPU is two CPUs, controlled by one chipset on MBO...here is a link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ABIT_BP6

I know how to do i manually...but this is better, 'cause UDagent wasn't so friendly to my crunching with single job (divided by cores, one for sending data, onda for working on calcs), as is BOINC...even though i run 2 jobs, on both CPUs (each on their own CPU), and large SWAP & RAM consumtion...no problems here!

well only the starting up the Opera is a little pain...but all runs smooothly, no latency, no problems when you upload it...funny, but true! biggrin
somethimes i had even more than 20tabs active...it worked, just a bit slower...but it worked! IE7 broke after 5... laughing laughing laughing

also the video card has got 64MB...enough! although i haven't run a game in a while...didn't have time!
