So i'm running windows vista and the BOINC agent, everything runs fine until it goes into screen saver mode then the sceen starts to flicker, it appears to still be running but it keeps flickering and is really annoying. This is on my laptop and only want to run durring the screen saver, so if i can't fix this i won't be able to get any units done without annoying me.
Any idea's how to stop this? thanks |

Hello epond83,
What screensaver are you running? What is your system like? In particular, what sort of graphics does it use? Lawrence |

My laptop is a dell, with a NVUDIA GeForce Go 7900, 2GB ram, 2.0 GHz i have the resolution set at 1900x1200. |

Hello epond83,
Why not try a different screensaver? I am not sure but you might be able to run BOINC in screensaver mode with a different screensaver. I think it would be a worthwhile experiment. Lawrence |

Try different resolutions. oogle brings a number of projects to surface to include NVidia with BOINC v 5.8. Also Firewalls are reported to interfere. Have you set permission for BOINC.scr ? Vista is picky on top what programs that can communicate and the screensaver sure does over localhost port 31416 with the BOINC.exe core client.

I'm impressed that you got the BOINC screensaver to run at all under vista. That is not supposed to be possible until the 6.x.x clients are released.

It doesn't work for me at all. Not that I ever use the BOINC screen saver... If you don't want BOINC running while you are, then change your preferences (either on the web - someone more WCG savy will have to tell you how - or in the local override). Set the delay to whatever you used for your screen saver. You won't get the pretty WCG pictures (and the Vista screen savers are pretty limited) but you'll still be crunching. |

SOLLUTION:
----------------------------------------stop using the BOINC screensaver...if you are a real cruncher, screensaving is the least fo your worries! ADD 1: use the TURN OFF monitor after 5min of idle time...that will reduce your electricity bill & get down the CO2 emissions! ![]() |

yeah i just have it set to start working after a certain amount of time, and have a different screen saver, i just liked looking at the cool graphics while i listion to music and work on other stuff
so yeah doesn't seem to be a fix, just an avoidance, side note with my Duo processor i can crunch two units at once which is pretty sweet |

when you open a BOINC in simple mode, click on Preferences, last option down is the Do work after idle - set it to some value...and you got yourself a working unit after you don't use the core (i have dual CPU, so it runs in one core - other is disabled for Opera...then starts after 1min of idle time!)...
----------------------------------------screensaver only slows down the process, 'cause it needs RAM to load (and SWAP)...it takes over the whole process in loading, then when returning to OS it has to stop executing - also takes a lot of time... that is wasted time for crunching & wasted time for using the comp...and without it, move with the mouse & computer is ready to use - monitor turns ON, no opening or closing of the programs (screensaver) - and the crunching is done in the background, without interfering... |
