Re: Speed Test The Global Broadband Speed Test

Speed aint everything

Re: Speed Test The Global Broadband Speed Test

With bandwidth conditions affecting the new CEP2 project it might be time to bump this thread...

Use "Settings" in SpeedTest's menu bar to easily select Toronto as the remote server and run the test.

Note that you will measure the best speeds which can be achieved on transmitting big enough files.
Your bandwidth as measured by BOINC will usually be much lower because of smaller files and other practical operational conditions.

Ok, my result for Toronto are:

Since CEP2-uploads apparently won't go to the normal WCG-servers, but to Hardvard, Cambridge, the AFAIK closest I've found is Boston:

Atleast for me there's no significant difference between these 2 locations. This is possibly due to download-speed is max 2 Mbit/s, and unfortunately too long distance to get faster speed. sad

Note that you will measure the best speeds which can be achieved on transmitting big enough files.
Your bandwidth as measured by BOINC will usually be much lower because of smaller files and other practical operational conditions.

1.90 Mbit/s equals 237.5 kbyte/s, and 0.39 Mbit/s equals 48.8 kbyte/s.

My BOINC-numbers is probably not a very good comparison with WCG at this time, except possibly for someone only running CEP2:
<net_stats>
<bwup>36597.412853</bwup>
<avg_up>20801957.189721</avg_up>
<avg_time_up>1278005108.266607</avg_time_up>
<bwdown>208101.894593</bwdown>
<avg_down>6255890173.190351</avg_down>
<avg_time_down>1278004396.053871</avg_time_down>
</net_stats>

Running BOINC with 1 transfer/project, and today being the start of this months SIMAP-work, is reasons for BOINC being so close to the Speedtest-measurements.

I thought of that when I wrote my posts here and in the CEP2 thread, but-
1. as your tests confirm there is not much difference between Toronto and Boston for a long distance test like from Europe
2. likely, people who will feel the need for a test are those who cannot receive CEP2 work, and thus their current BOINC measurements are based on traffic with the Toronto servers; not Harvard yet. Once they get their first CEP2 work the size of the files should improve their bandwidth measurements (assuming that the Harvard servers are up to the work).

Re: Speed Test The Global Broadband Speed Test

Tested a couple of times but Toronto is definitely worse than Boston.
