If it is the case that upcoming projects are BOINC only, could one of the WCG staff please make a prominent announcement so that anyone with UD agents can begin making the transition?
----------------------------------------Thanks! ![]() As for the topic of the thread, UD will only be around for FAAH and HPF2 for as long as they last. Future projects will only be set up on BOINC. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Jul 24, 2007 1:28:16 PM] |

That's getting a bit ahead of ourselves - the UD agent is still available as an alternative.
I believe WCG plan to phase it out. They will withdraw the UD agent, then begin promoting a switch to BOINC. The UD projects are projected to last well over a year more, so there's no urgent rush. But forum-hounds reading this thread can take this as advanced warning: BOINC is the future! :-D |

Roll On!!!
Then at last we will be able to wash that bad taste, UD , out of our lives. At the moment all it does is remind us of the way that they betrayed some of us, after devoting many years to them....... |

Both of the current projects, FAAH and HPF2, are available in both BOINC and UD.
----------------------------------------Get the soap. There's no reason to stay with UD if you want to use BOINC NOW. On the other hand, there is at least enough work to keep the UD version busy for at least another year if you insist on sticking with it. That would be regardless of what decision is made about other projects. I still have both UD and BOINC installed, although both should not be run at the same time in the same core. If you have a true (not HT) multicore machine, it is certainly possible to run UD in one core and BOINC in another core if you want a little of both. Last winter, some blizzards knocked out the BOINC servers for several days. I took down boinc, brought up UD and crunched some UD workunits for awhile. When BOINC returned, I took UD down, brought up BOINC, and resumed work. The advantages of UD are easier sneakernetting with remote computers and a larger graphics display. BOINC is more automated. Sekerob has some comparison charts in a BOINC vs. UD thread. https://secure.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=14964#117936 Over 40 different entities are now using BOINC, not just extraterrestrial searches. I am attached to 46, although a few have finished. There is currently work for less than 30, though. Some don't have much going on or have even figured it out. WCG has been sending us useful work at 100% load 24/7 for the 2 years I have been here, and likely before that. In the next few months we should see an amazing amount of SIMILTANEOUS projects here at WCG. The other entities can also be mixed and matched, with a little crunching for each before it gets swapped out for another BOINC. That gets a bit ahead of the question.

......I still have both UD and BOINC installed, although both should not be run at the same time in the same core....... Why not? I do just that on my son's machine. Assuming that 'nothing' else runs on that machine the work share is 50/50. In that time UD who operate 'wall-clock' has 24 hours of CPU time. Boinc does 'real' CPU time and it has 12 hours of CPU time.....simple arithmatic then give 36 hours CPU time for a 24 hour period on a single core machine....neat! |

Underlying truth being, that there is still only 24 CPU hours of iops/flops being moved, but credit received for 36 Run Time Hours.... now that's nifty.

Your machine must be well behaved. I got a lot of thrashing around here. It started off OK but then degraded.
