BOINC 5 will still run BOINC 6 applications - there just won't be any graphics available.

BOINC 6 is a BIG version - just about every aspect of BOINC has suggested enhancements or planned changes. With so many changes, it will need some serious testing - it will be a longer release cycle than usual. Automatic updates are one of the features under consideration.
