Re: Request for new "Community" forums

I know these suggestions don't go over very well, but that's never stopped me before, so . . .

This has come up in other threads so I think it's a worthwhile suggestion. It would be very helpful if we could had a couple of new forums to the "Community" section. Not a lot of them, just a few to help sort out some of the overcrowding in the Chat Room.

For example, I think there should definitely be a Games Forum. I know that the games posts will still come up in "recent threads", but you could get around that by just going to the Community forum you wanted to review.

Another one that might be good would to dedicate one to ex-Grorg'ers, but since there aren't really that many threads specifically dedicated to us, that wouldn't be a priority.

I'm glad people enjoy playing all of the word games that have been transplanted here from Grorg, but if you never participate, trying to sift through them to get to the other threads is a bit tedious.

Thank you.

bump
A grorg forum was already vetoed so it need not be quoted again.

Since there was an update in the "last post", I specifically looked here for new information but found nothing but a bump. Crying "wolf" will not help.

spend hours trying to see the useful stuff from the cr*p!

like a bump?

rose Re: Request for new "Community" forums

What might be more important is to think about why we need this change. It would be nice to have all we had at grid.org, but i doubt we will get much if we dont focus on the need angles.

We need an new forum for the games because they get bumped very rapidy and almost completely fill page1 of the chat room. This is a need but also an example. It shows why there is a need to change. Many will slow their need to communicate anything if its page 2 in minutes.

If you wonder why this is important? This being on page 2. Well look at my threads. The average view to hit ratio around here is about 10-1. My stuff comes in at 15 to 30-1. Why?

Re: Request for new "Community" forums

Courine - If you sign into "My Grid" (and have your profile set up properly) before going to the Forums, you will get many, many more listings per page. Otherwise, it thinks you're a guest and you get the default number of listings per page. I get 50 threads per page because I have it set to that in "my forum profile". The default I think is 10 per page - EXTREMELY annoying.

I'm not sure how many people realize that they have this option.

Also, you can try just looking at the threads for a particular forum. Many times I skip recent threads and just pull up chat room threads. If you're primarily interested in threads that reside in a particular forum, this bumps the signal to noise ratio way, way up.

This may help reduce your frustration level.

I know that your comments are directed at adding a new forum, but the root of the problem is the age of the forum software. As to that issue, the CA's have assured us that an upgrade for the software is on the "to do" list and may even be completed late this year. There are many improvements needed including pm'ing abilities (even though some people don't regard this as an improvement), improved filtering of posts based on your profile, etc., etc. Hopefully, they will also change the default number of threads per page too.

A more complete discussion is at Update forums to mvnforum 1.0 G.A or some other forum software

This system is so old it is probably optimized for dial-up users. Remember dial-up? I was digging in the yard recently and discovered a fossilized Hayes 9600 modem from Pleistocene era. It was right next to a full woolly mammoth skeleton - fascinating. Using dial-up must have been the cause of their extinction.

The adding of forums under the Community section shouldn't be a big deal and we might actually get that, but any software upgrades have to take a back seat - more like third row seat - to the projects of course. Don't know if you ever read anything in the forum software thread, but the software being used now is heavily modified so it will be a project unto itself to get it upgraded and working. That would take resources from the real work we all are dedicated to.

I don't like the idea anymore than you do. I did start this thread after all. But I understand the priorities and, all be it reluctantly, have to agree that the upgrade to the forum software is not high on the priority list.

In the meantime, I assume that the CA's and admins are considering adding a new forum for non-discussion chat room items such as games. If we don't hear anything more, we can always start bumping this thread.

Yes, even on dialup this can save time. It takes longer to download the first page, but less time to search for new messages.

Seeing a new message and going down here to possibly dispense advice, only to find a bump, is even more annoying than 10 game messages. I already griped about that once. I *AM* still using dialup, and my time is also precious. I am not in the mood to pay the going price for higher speeds, a secret price after the 6 month introductory rate. The admins are aware of what has been requested, and have placed the ideas on the consideration list. They pushed to get the caring and sharing forum in there, and it has been mostly inactive. What's the rush, in other words? Bumping the same idea over and over justs wastes our time and bandwidth. We can read. One idea and 20 bumps is a bit silly. Keep it simple. We can always recommend locking the thread if the idea request is finished. It's on the first page of the thread, usually. I'll put a bump thread in the chat area if you want to bump something.

Remember Fidonet? One system here has Procomm+ and can still call the 1-2 surviving local bulletin boards. The Y2K problem killed off the others.

There's no need to get upset. I didn't say we SHOULD start bumping the thread. AND, I haven't been griping about it. The previous posts never actually resolved the issue of whether or not it would even be considered. THEREFORE, I gave WCG the benefit of the doubt and assumed that y'all were in fact do just that - considering it.

The fact that the C&S forum hasn't gotten much use is irrelevant for reasons I've already explained. Therefore the comparison isn't appropriate. Further, I'm sure that C&S will get used as the membership grows and we get more people actively participating in the forums. Baring one's soul in a new venue is not an easy thing to do. Give it some time. You sound almost as impatient as me.

Re: Request for new "Community" forums

It was resolved. It was considered. And the verdict was "not now".

bbover3 said:
The Caring & Sharing forum was set up because it is very much in line with the type of discussions that we at World Community Grid have seen many times in the past and continue to encourage. We rushed that one because we thought there was a huge demand for it. But as if this writing, there are only 3 threads in it. So we are not going to rush and create any additional forums.

As far as a special forum for grid.org alumni..... that's not going to happen. We welcome everyone from grid.org but will not set up forums that exclude most of the World Community Grid members.

Regarding a game forum....We'll take that under consideration but will not be in a rush to get it out there until we see how the Caring & Sharing one is used.

And for now, that is all that needs to be said. Feel free to raise the issue again in a few months time.
