Re: Request for new "Community" forums

Not wishing to be a wet blanket, but this is rather more difficult (technically) to provide than the Caring and Sharing forum.

And, given that the new Caring and Sharing forum hasn't seen much traffic yet, personally I'd be inclined to sit on this request for a while.

While you're all unanimous in wanting this, there's no real urgent need for it.

Wait a while. This request will have more weight when the Caring and Sharing forum is a success, and the games threads have shown they stand the test of time. There are very few active games threads, you know - I count 2.

Re: Request for new "Community" forums

The Caring and Sharing forum will take time to get going, that is the nature of that forum

The Games forum will be hit on a daily, if not hourly basis, especially if people know where to find them.

The 2 forums are quite different in their usage, and the people that use them

Re: Request for new "Community" forums

The Caring & Sharing forum was set up because it is very much in line with the type of discussions that we at World Community Grid have seen many times in the past and continue to encourage. We rushed that one because we thought there was a huge demand for it. But as if this writing, there are only 3 threads in it. So we are not going to rush and create any additional forums.

As far as a special forum for grid.org alumni..... that's not going to happen. We welcome everyone from grid.org but will not set up forums that exclude most of the World Community Grid members.

Regarding a game forum....We'll take that under consideration but will not be in a rush to get it out there until we see how the Caring & Sharing one is used.

I apologize for seeming disagreeable but I don't think that comparison is valid. As the g-man pointed out, the games threads get hits constantly - literally. Whereas CnS is brand new and had no existing threads which could be transplanted into the new forum.

You're probably used to picking through a vast number of threads as part of your CA duties. I envy that ability. But for mere mortals, picking through the games threads induces frustration, eye strain and may even cause seizures due to the rapid, rhythmic eye movements required. Now is that some you want to be responsible for?

Re: Request for new "Community" forums

Heh. Yes, I appreciate you want the feature. I'd give it you if I could, since it doesn't harm anyone.

But Bill agrees with me - there's hardly enough demand, and it can be reconsidered later. And Bill always has the final word :-)

As I said - there are only 2 pure game threads. The other frivolous threads are perfectly suited to the chatroom - jokes, daily threads, that sort of thing.

There's Hexagame and Step Ladder. Have I missed any?

I'm astonished people think I would want to exclude anyone. I was completely luke-warm and half-hearted about the possibility of a Grorg forum. I just figured that if we have a couple Grorg threads, maybe those should be segregated. I had absolutely no idea that this would touch a nerve.

And I'm still a bit mystified. What happened at Grorg was traumatic for some of us. While the consensus seems to be to move on, that doesn't mean we have to ignore the past.

But if the idea of what appears to be an exclusive forum is upsetting in any way to any one, then I withdraw that part of my suggestion.

My apologies.
