I finally finished episodes 25 and 26 of Evangelion. It was rough going with the subtitles and pausing/restarting. I even started thinking in Japanese - not the language, but Japanese sounding gibberish. Which I guess would imply my thoughts are gibberish, but that's a topic for another day. Congratulations on maintaining the momentum to see it through #26. It might help gel the gibberish to go forward and see End of Evangelion now. As a possible bonus, later on I can point you to some of the creative music videos I've found of Evangelion, without revealing spoilers. |

The series is meant, IMHO, to be more like a painting than a story. It's meant to evoke but not resolve. That's an apt description of another Japanese film: Akira Kurosawa's "Flowers". It's a beautiful live-action collection of remembrances and short stories from a master filmmaker. Check it out. [Edit 1 times, last edit by wdfarmer at Jun 11, 2007 7:34:22 AM] |

Having trouble finding the re-worked versions of episode 25 and 26 for Neon Genesis. I'm getting everything from usenet and sometimes the files aren't what I need. For Gundam Wing, I got the Japanese version with English subtitles but there was no sound. That's one example.
----------------------------------------The version I have now for End of Evangelion is in OGM format and I haven't been able to find a utility (free) that will convert to any other format. Riverpast says it can handle OGM, but seems to crash part way through the conversion. The newest version of AVS is also supposed to handle it, but don't want to spend the $40. Guess I'll have to keep checking for another version. In the meantime, saw "Spirited Away" and went to theater to see "Surf's Up". Also looking forward to Ratatoullie - June 29th in US. Spirited Away was both engaging and relaxing. I can see why this is a big favorite. The story was well told and unfolded seamlessly. My fiancee, who normally has no interest in anime was completely drawn into it - high praise. Surf's Up was a good story with good visuals. I can't say that I fell in love with any of the characters but I certainly wasn't disappointed either. It's not something I would see again but I did enjoy it. Definitely rent it for the kids when the dvd comes out. ![]() ![]() |

Try BlockBuster or Netflix for "End of Evangelion". That will cost you less than $40. Your local BlockBuster may even have it. Spirited Away was both engaging and relaxing. I can see why this is a big favorite. The story was well told and unfolded seamlessly. My fiancee, who normally has no interest in anime was completely drawn into it - high praise. That's great to hear; I'm glad you both enjoyed it. Yes, it's beautifully told, and I think it is quite accessible to people who haven't seen Anime before. Having seen that, you might be interested in some of Miyazaki's earlier work: "Porco Rosso" and "Castle in the Sky". Porco Rosso is 1920's-era historical fiction about ex-World War I pilots in the Mediterranean; Castle in the Sky is a bit more fantasic and magical. I haven't seen "Nadia of Blue Water" but I think it would be like Castle in the Sky. Something else you may want to try, if you can get it: Episodes 21 - 24 of Neon Genesis Evangelion appear twice in the platinum edition, with a separate DVD having numbers 21', 22', 23', 24' which are the "director's cut" editions of 21, 22, 23, 24. Most interesting of the new stuff there is, inserted at the front of 21', a "Top Secret" video of the moments in Antarctica just prior to Second Impact. And inserted at the front of 22' is a private moment between Asuka and Kaji at night on the deck of the aircraft carrier prior to the events in "Asuka Strikes!". Try BlockBuster or Netflix for "End of Evangelion". That will cost you less than $40. Your local BlockBuster may even have it. I almost ended up suing Netflix because they were "throttling" my deliveries. I had signed up for the 8-at-a-time plan and they weren't sending new dvd's out when they were supposed to. The only problem was there was no way I could prove it. I would have to be incredibly desperate to deal with Netflix again. Blockbuster's mail service sucked even worse. A week after I had requested a particular dvd - which was available according to their online listings - I still hadn't received it. I pay about $25/mo for Giganews and get way more than my money's worth. With a retention period of 120 days, almost everything I've searched for I've found - it just isn't always exactly what I want, but for the price, I can accept some inconvenience. He has quite a long list of films so other recommendations would also be welcome.Something else you may want to try, if you can get it: Episodes 21 - 24 of Neon Genesis Evangelion appear twice in the platinum edition, with a separate DVD having numbers 21', 22', 23', 24' which are the "director's cut" editions of 21, 22, 23, 24. I'll keep searching for a good version of End of Evangelion though. Let me know if you've heard of any OGM, OGG utilities.![]() ![]() |

Frugality is fine, but when I admire a piece of art enough, and I can afford it, I'm happy to buy it in the usual way, knowing that part of my purchase price is returned to the artist in royalties.
Right now on Amazon.com, the 26 episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion, plus the 4 director's-cut episodes, are available in a nice boxed set of 6 individually cased DVDs for $45.99. End of Evangelion is available for $22.99, or as little as $11.96 if you want to buy a used copy. Shipping is free if you're willing to wait a few days for delivery. For me, those prices deliver a pretty good value, and I don't have to bother with file conversions, etc. But I can understand that your circumstances may be different from mine. That's what's great about the marketplace... we can each shop for what we want at a price we're willing to pay. |

I don't mind supporting artists. I was happy to hand Netflix $50 each month - until I realized that they weren't going to keep their end of the deal. I could easily have ripped and burned every disk they sent me if I wanted to keep a copy for myself, but I never did since it is extremely rare that I watch something more than once - including things that I really enjoy. Even the stuff I download gets deleted as soon as I've watched it since even with several terabytes of storage, I'm always running out of space.
----------------------------------------Plus, I like to give money to charity and one of the ways I can afford to do that is by watching the pennies. So in some ways I'm a real cheapskate, but in other ways I'm just the opposite. Thank you for doing the research. I've sold things on ebay and amazon but it almost never occurs to me to shop there. The next thing on my anime list is Lain (serial experiment) and then possibly Boogiebop Phantom. If the fiancee is into it though, Howl's moving castle might get bumped to the top of the list. She enjoyed Spirited Away so I might be able to get her hooked on anime. Currently I'm finishing up the second season of Rome (HBO series) and watching early episodes of Lexx that I never got the chance to see when it was on television. ![]() ![]() |

Yuki was right - I have no idea what Lain is about. You're told that Lain is actually a physical manifestation of a wired program designed to dissolve the boundary between what's "real" and what's "virtual". That implies that most of the story takes place in the physical world. But there are clues all over the place (like the colored shadows and the growth of wires on the side of her house) that seem to point to it being a virtual environment. The only thing I can come up with is that the story is what it might be like to be a program that's self-aware but going insane. I also have no idea what the alien connection is. As far as I could tell, it only appeared once and was only mentioned indirectly with the short blurb about Roswell.
----------------------------------------At some point I'll have to see what Wikipedia has to say but I'd love to hear someone else's interpretation. ![]() ![]() |

Saw "Laputa - Castle in the Sky". I thought it was a great story and loved the graphics. The ending was a bit confusing for me. I still don't understand the significance of the tree and why it (or the etherium crystal) wasn't destroyed.
----------------------------------------Would still love to hear opinions on Lain as well as Laputa. ![]() ![]() |

Well, now... seems it's time for me to finish watching my copy of "Castle In The Sky". I started & got interrupted a while ago. Nice to hear you liked it and that it had a bit of a puzzle at the end.
----------------------------------------Many people say nice things about Miyazaki's "Nausicaa and the Valley of Wind". I think I have a copy but haven't watched it yet. You said you saw "Spirited Away". "Princess Mononoke" is also quite good, with similar quality of animation. The trailers for "Nadia of Blue Water" make it seem a bit like "Castle In the Sky", being another team-up of a magical girl and a adventurous/courageous boy, I think, so I think you'd like that too. This would be a good time to see "Dreams" by Akira Kurosawa, the master Japanese film director. "Dreams" is a collection of eight short live-action films, each said to be based on a dream that the director had at one time in his life. I think this film gives you a good sense of what's behind the anime tradition, where we see beauty and mystery alternate with apocalyptic horror. The atomic explosions of Hiroshima and Nagasaki left a deep searing scar across the artistic consciousness of Japanese film makers. (The apocalyptic "nightmares" in this film don't rely on gore or violence to make their point; rather they bemoan a possible future of mankind.) But don't be put off by that; the beautiful moments exceed the sad moments, and the overall impression is one of peace with the earth and with life.
