Tell us about your favorite anime series' - past and present. What you like or dislike, plot line summaries, etc.
----------------------------------------I'm watching the Trinity Blood series right now. As with many anime plot lines it is set in a post Armageddon future. The world is divided into factions that coexist although somewhat uneasily. One is controlled by the Vatican, another by vampires. There is also a shadowy organization that seems to be loosely based on the Rosicrucians - very loosely since they seem to be in league with the devil. The series is an interesting mix of advanced technology and magic - although the line between the 2 is pretty blurry most of the time. I love the graphics. They're detailed, ornate and complex - especially for anime. The characters often follow anime stereotypes but can at times be complex. The main character is what appears to be a super-vampire/cybernetic hybrid. I hope other anime fans will contribute their opinions and recommendations. ![]() ![]() |

I just watched "Appleseed" (several times!)
----------------------------------------The graphics are the best yet and the story line is clear... A young female warrior is kidnapped to a city "utopia" where she gets involved in an adventure that determines the fait of humanity... I also like "Full Metal Panic" and "Ghost in the Shell", but the storyline of "GitS" is very difficult... I'm a techy anime fan... I started with "AKIRA", a must-see movie for any starting anime fan!! Trinity Blood? Is that on the tele or on DVD?

Does Speed Racer count? Why, you ask? Well it is is the only one I can think of right now. I did watch it alot when I was a kid. I think so. There are several sub-genres. Don't know which one Speed Racer falls into. I've known people who think it is the greatest cartoon of all time. I can't say it's one of my favs though. I've only seen it a few times though. If you go to tv.com and click on the "animation" tab, you can have the site list the top rated anime - rated by members of course. You might be able to find something else you will like. If you do, odds are you can find it on usenet. If you want more info on downloading from usenet groups or finding things on usenet, please post again or email me (you have to sign in to see people's email, ICQ, AIM, etc. addresses). If you don't like the idea of dl'ing things posted on usenet, there's always netflix and blockbuster (by mail not stores). Happy viewing. ![]() ![]() |

Glad you made it over to the WCG. Couldn't find appleseed on tv.com but guess that's because it's a movie not a serial. Found it on usenet (alt.binaries.dvd.anime) and am dl'ing as we speak (so to speak). I looked at the review of full metal panic and the fumoffu version. It seems a little cute, but you can't get the full flavor from a review. If you think it's worth a look, I'll check into it. Will also check into Akira. My preference is for serials though so it will probably be a while before I get to either. Still need to watch Smokin' Aces, Terabithia, Mission Impossible 3, and a bunch of others - in addition to getting my anime fix. The next episode of Ghost in the shell will air June 11th (see Ghost in the shell at tv.com.) I get almost everything from usenet. If you want to know more, please email me or post again. There are some copyright infringement issues when pulling stuff off usenet, but it's not like bit torrent or other peer-to-peer file sharing where someone will come knocking on your door to wag their finger at you - bad computer user, bad, bad. To get the best selection you'll need a premium news service like giganews, but considering what you get - or can get - it's a tiny investment. Use binsearch.info to find what you want (better to use the "advanced search" feature) and Newsbin to download - since binsearch will create an NZB file that you can slurp right up into Newsbin. If you prefer something more mainstream and less gray market, try Netflix or the blockbuster mail service. Don't know if either/both available in your locale. Cartoon Network in US is currently airing Trinity Blood - think they're on disk 3 of the dvd collection - and there are some differences from the dvd - think some stuff got edited. There's also funimation.com but I can't tell if they're a bona fide network, webcaster or distributor. As a last resort, you can always buy dvd's, but that's a pricey option if you're buying something based only on a review or recommendation. Also, some anime series can have many, many dvd volumes. For some reason, anime discs seem to sell at a premium, but you can probably get a decent deal online. I would start at ebay. People unload their entire collections there. ![]() ![]() |

I'm a sucker for the more technical side of animation. I love the work of Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. The backgrounds alone are to die for! They may be kids films, but they are the peak of the genre. Stories are way beyond the usual predictable Disney cliché, too.
Speaking of technical kids movies, I'm a huge fan of John Lasseter. I remember a lot of the Autodesk 3D stuff was based on RenderMan, and Luxo Jr. was shipped in the examples..... |

They may be kids films, but they are the peak of the genre. Stories are way beyond the usual predictable Disney cliché, too. Will add "Spirited Away" to my list. According to Wikipedia an Academy Award winning 2001 film by the Japanese anime studio Studio Ghibli, written and directed by famed animator Hayao Miyazaki. . . The film received many awards, including the second Oscar ever awarded for Best Animated Feature, the first anime film to win an Academy Award, and the only winner of that award to win among five nominees (in every other year there were three nominees). Speaking of technical kids movies, I'm a huge fan of John Lasseter. I remember a lot of the Autodesk 3D stuff was based on RenderMan, and Luxo Jr. was shipped in the examples..... I've seen one of the Luxo shorts, but not the one I think you're talking about. I loved Cars and Monsters Inc. but my favorite Disney animation is still Finding Nemo - love Dori - I can so relate. ![]() ![]() |

I care little for anime series, but there is one animated film, which I used to see at every opportunity. This was "Fantasia" by Walt Disney Studios, with music by the Philadephia Symphony Orchestra.

Fantasia's kind of meh - but Fantasia 2000 hits all the right buttons.
And on an IMAX screen, with the fantastic sound system that comes with? Of course, it's too long for standard IMAX cinemas, but 3D IMAX theatres can play it by switching from reel 1 on the left eye, to reel 2 on the right eye. Genius. |

Oh, one other title comes to mind...: Cowboy Bebop!
----------------------------------------I'm still looking for a dvd version (I've dl'ed some legal *fansubbed* divx'es) Very nice dramatic stories, graphics are good (but not impressive if you compare it to appleseed (http://www.appleseedthemovie.com/) )Ghost in the Shell Stand Alone Complex is very nice, but the stories are too political/complex (hence the name...! )
