Re: Anime thread

wd - Thanks for the heads up while at the same time not revealing any of the plot. I'm up to episode 7 I think. I'm having a little trouble with the sub titles still. Feel a little guilty that I'm not fully appreciating the graphics.

You said there are sequels. This going to sound like a stupid question, but what are they called? When I search on either "Neon Genesis" or "Evangelion" on tv.com I only get the one result. When I search usenet (binsearch.info) I get "Evangelion Platinum" and "End of Evangelion". Are these sequels? The first sounds like a collector's dvd release. The second sounds like it could be another series.

Will dl the second one.

BTW - welcome to the team. Feel free to borrow/modify my sig. Also, Courine posted a possible sig in the team thread that is also nice. If you want something unique and would like some help or ideas, let me know. Sign in to see my email address.

Episode 8 (Asuka Strikes) is one of the best. You have something to look forward to. :) Asuka is the complete opposite of Rei, even in color scheme: Rei has blue hair and red eyes; Asuka has red hair and blue eyes.
You said there are sequels. This going to sound like a stupid question, but what are they called?

The Wikipedia article has your answers, right in the text at the top of the article. You can safely read that without encountering any spoilers; just don't scroll down to the sections named "Plot", etc.
BTW - welcome to the team.

Thank you! Nice to be here.

Re: Anime thread

Had to read the paragraph about series and movies a couple times, but I think I got it. So, if I watch episodes 1-26 and then watch End of Evangelion, that covers everything - right?

Up to episode 12 now.

Rei is a puzzling character. Just saw first flashback to get sense of history regarding angels, first and second impacts.

As a hypothesis for genesis of angels, I'm going with the idea of self perpetuating, self designed cyborgs that regard humans as viral infection - but I have nothing to base that on. Aliens is too obvious. That idea would go well with episode 11 where HQ power failure seemed to have been caused by internal agent - Magi maybe?

OK - don't tell me - just speculating.

Yes, that will do fine. The other stuff isn't that important.

Ok, I won't tell you about the validity of your speculations. :) That's the fun of it. Much of this stuff didn't begin to come together for me until about my sixth viewing of the whole series.

Don't get frustrated if even after that, you don't understand it all. As I said earlier, the director purposely left in a lot of ambiguity. Once you've seen the whole series enough so that nothing new appears for you, then you could choose to read the Wikipedia articles and other Eva links to discover what others have thought and conjectured about what it means. And you can certainly talk to me about it. :)

Re: Anime thread

I don't think I've ever watched anything more than 3 or 4 times - Fifth Element (Milla Jovovich is just so adorable - a little cutsie, but even so . . . ), Blade Runner, Finding Nemo. Can't think of anything recent. Oh, I have seen Rocky Horror Picture Show about 10 times, but that's more of a social event. Wonder if it's still in theaters anywhere.

I've been paying very close attention to the dialog. Starting with episode 21 I think, you start getting double and triple subtitles from simultaneous conversations. I've been pausing and restarting - at times, every few seconds. It's exhausting. But I guess I won't know if I've missed anything until the end.

I had a bit of a problem with Shinji being reconstituted after being absorbed by Unit 01 but other than that, the scientific foundations are reasonably credible. The mystery surrounding Rei is really intensifying. I have to say she's my favorite character.

I did miss what happened regarding Shinji's mother's death. I couldn't tell if she'd been murdered, committed suicide or what that was about. Of course this was toward the end of the section where they're jumping back and forth between non-chronological flashbacks.

Think I'm on episode 22 now, but it's slow going so might not finish till tomorrow sometime.

Re: Anime thread

:) Glad you're having fun. Some fun topics that I puzzled over while viewing the series. (This isn't a quiz.)

1. Why do some of the episode titles refer to Rei I, Rei II, etc?

2. What are Angels? Where do they come from? How are they created? Why are they attacking?

3. What are Evas? Where did they come from? How were they created? Are they conscious? Are they living beings, mechanical machines, or a combination of both? Why do some of the children sync well with one Eva but not another? Why are they kept chilled between uses? What's happening when they go bezerk?

4. What happened during Second Impact?

5. What is hidden in Terminal Dogma? Why is it kept carefully protected?

6. What happened to Shinji's mother? Asuka's mother? Rei's mother? Ritsuko's mother? Misato's mother?

7. What did Kaji deliver to Gendo after the angel attacked the naval ships?

8. What is Gendo's objective? What is SEELE's objective?

Re: Anime thread

I finally finished episodes 25 and 26 of Evangelion. It was rough going with the subtitles and pausing/restarting. I even started thinking in Japanese - not the language, but Japanese sounding gibberish. Which I guess would imply my thoughts are gibberish, but that's a topic for another day.

I don't think NGE was ever meant to be understood. I think it was supposed to be a dream within a dream. Just like a dream, it made enough sense to weave the parts together, but not enough to distract from the impression that was being created. The series is meant, IMHO, to be more like a painting than a story. It's meant to evoke but not resolve.

I think the center of the story is the Human Complement Project. The idea that we find meaning through others but at the same time can create our own internal reality. Changing how you view a scene can make the difference between seeing something and not. Someone who does you a favor - do they do it out of pity or out of respect or concern? The reality is partly determined by their actions and partly by your perceptions.

I know this seems like a facile way out of the problem, and it may be just that. Maybe Anno changed his mind part way through and wanted to convey a metaphysical message rather than whatever he had in mind at the start. It seems that way because you don't get any hint of the series being dreamlike until toward the end - can't remember when Shinji was first seen on the red train. I would like to give Anno the benefit of the doubt though and assume that the finale episodes were his intended conclusion.

The recurring theme of motherhood would coincide with this interpretation since as one of the episodes points out, the mother is the first contact with the world - you could say the first "human complement".

A lot the elements, just as with a painting, can have a variety of interpretations - Angels, Adam, Lance of Longinus - and I'm not sure I remember everything well enough to try any of them out here.

Re: Anime thread

I won't mention anything concerning Evangelion since everyone seems to be coming along nicely with their various conclusions, but I will make one comment on subtitles.

The Cartoon Network generation of anime watchers seem to have great difficulty with the subtitles. All I can say is the more anime you watch with them, the better you get at viewing the anime with a sort of "second sight" while still reading subtitles. And you get a lot faster at reading ; ) I do recommend watching series in both sub and dub versions as MANY anime seem to have huge variations in story lines between the two. Some to the point of being totally different stories all together! It also gives you a chance to catch all those little things you miss. Lastly, until you get the hang of subtitles I would say away from anime such as Excel Saga and Kodocha since spastic anime such as these contain so many subtitles, pop up translations, and hints to inside joke explanations that the average anime watcher just can't keep up!

One recommendation I can make for understanding of anime is brush up on your Japanese history and culture some. The more you understand about Japan and it's people the more random subtle things you'll catch that other people miss while watching anime. It just serves to broaden the richness of the stories.

Agreed! I was never more aware of that need than when watching Miyazaki's "Spirited Away". I was sure each of the various gods and creatures portrayed had a rich cultural subtext that Japanese viewers would be aware of, but which I was missing out on completely.
Heh, but then, the Japanese have the same problem with our culture. Ever visit Engrish.com ? wink
