Re: The Formula One Thread

They do not have a fixed size in the rules, it depends on the cars fuel mileage so each car is slightly different. Each race is about 150 miles, it is 'officially' in KM but again varies depending on track, most races are around 60 laps or so. Hungary was 70 laps. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I really did not know that the rules were not consistent for the cars--i usually only get to watch the Indy race--i guess they are the same cars?? back in the 60s i was in Long Beach California and they blocked off streets and had a race there. To me racing especially NASCAR is not as much fun as before big company's started backing certain drivers also drag racing which did the same pushed out small car builders because if they blew an engine all they had to do was go to the dealer and get a new engine--One of my brothers in law started his career on the Datona Beach sand--one of the best mechanics ive ever known--and like you said he knew how to cheat to get an advantage-- smile

F1 is similar to IndyCars but about the only thing is the open wheel design, the Indy Cars run on alot of oval tracks while the F1 cars NEVER do. Even when the F1 cars went to Indy they used only a small part of the oval and used alot of the interior road course part much more! F1 cars are designed from the ground up for enhanced aerodynamic performance thru the corners. They can stop on a dime and give 25 cents change! They can go thru corners like a slot car can and still get around 215 mph on tracks like Monza, Italy. When Lewis Hamilton, a McLaren F1 driver traded cars with Nascar driver Tony Stewart, Hamilton said the Nascar car was like a tank around the track and couldn't stop! While Stewart said the stopping distances were VERY hard to get used to and the cornering loads hurt his neck! Several years ago Jeff Gordon of Nascar and then F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya traded cars and each thought the others car was VERY fun and difficult to drive! Both sets of trades were for a day and a promotional event. JPM won the Indy 500 and then went to F1 and had a LARGE learning curve before winning an event. Each kind of car is set up for its own kinds of tracks and each excels at it.

Re: The Formula One Thread

Just a drive in the park for Hamilton. A surprise second for Perez (Sauber) and a 3rd and 4th for Ferrari. A DNF for both Red Bull cars. Lots of close racing, passing and mechanical failures in positions P2-P10. Good race. coffee

I am GLAD they gave Vettel a drive thru penalty on his move on Alonso! I HOPE they stay consistent with that kind of dirty driving, blocking is NOT legal in F1 when the other car is alongside you! OUTSTANDING drive by Perez and Sauber cars today!! The Red Bulls are starting to show that they are not as invincible as last year! With Newey's 'genius' you would think they could duct some fresh cool air to that alternator and then reuse it afterwards! How much air can it take, a small tube coming from inside the 'letter box' slot in the nose should do it, or even from the front wing area.

Re: The Formula One Thread

That was fun. I really enjoyed the race. Superb driving and strategy for Perez. Alonso was also great. Lewis had a good car and made no mistakes. I was happy for a second when I saw a McLaren stopping at one side, but it was Button devilish

I also think that the penalty on Vettel was well deserved. This has been a weekend to forget for Red Bull.

Next... Singapore at night in two weeks. This championship is far from decided!

Re: The Formula One Thread

@Dave: The Brit’s have a right to gloat. That was an almost perfect drive by Hamilton. applause
@Mikey: Yep, with all the state-of-the-art, expensive technology which is F1, one would think they could cool an alternator. confused
@Bono: Agreed the penalty was deserved … in fact the infraction was blatant. But as they say in New Jersey, “Everything is legal as long as you don’t get caught.” laughing I wonder what factory Ferrari thinks about an engine they sold besting the factory cars? Perez was amazing.
On to Singapore. While not one of my favorite tracks, this 23-turn, 5.07 km circuit keeps drivers focused. Turn 10, The Singapore Sling, is a quick, short distance, left-right-left producing large lateral forces and drivers can almost see their own rear tires in turn 13. With 7 races to go, the championship is far from being decided.

I am guessing it had to do with the gearbox and rear end gearing ratios as opposed to the actual engine. Sauber made a different choice than Ferrari did and it worked out for them. Remember for your early days a 411 rear end will make the car get off the line quicker but a set of 323 gears will give you more top end. Given that they can change the transmission gears too, they could take advantage of both thru an overdrive gear in the transmission giving Perez the power to drive past the Ferrari on the straights. Our personal cars do that now, but they call it 'higher gas mileage' as we don't push the engine to its rev limits. There used to be an old story about a straight line race..put a stock Chevy Corvette and a stock Chevy Cadillac together, who wins? Answer depends on the length of the race, anything up to 1 to 2 miles the Corvette wins EVERY TIME! But after that the Lincoln uses its gearing to pass it by with ease! In the US they can run races like that in the desert, and some Western States.
