Welcome to the new diggs!!
I think you'll find this place more accomodating & they communicate much better.
So pull up a motherboard & stay a while!
Find a nice team (see the hint in my signature? LOL) & crunch away!

I did 185 years plus of CPU time 'over there'.
I'm only averaging 1000 CPU hours/day so far; but you never know which unit will be 'the one' that saves a life. Every cruncher counts!
It'll take a while to get close to where I was here, but this seems more worthwhile.

Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

I had emailed Mary Bass about starting a newsletter. She told me to get back to her at the beginning of May. Gee wiz, do ya think she knew what was going to happen? Nahhhhh
We now know what the first story was, but the newsletter circulation's likely a lot smaller than it would have been.

sad Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

The reason why I dont ask about the grid.org letter or any issue like it, is that if is not something criminal, then there is no vennue here to present any case. In short, if it doesnt have a case number attached, it should be regarded as rumor.

The problem is not that we dont want to know, but it does get in the way of transition. A goal that this thread is primarily based.

Soon we will be looking at the final tally of those whom have not made it. I call them MIA's. The basic machine count has been reached recently but the statistics regarding power doent seem to reflect a complete transition. Only about 80 to 85%.

The point that we turn and mourn those lost at sea, will be when the total device count passes 645K. For at that point, the normal increase of personel and machines will past the size of the influx caused by the disaster when the grid folded.

Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

Didn't intend to be at odds with the purpose of your thread. I think it was a very good idea to give people a place to feel comfortable during the transition and to feel some camaraderie afterwards. After all, a whole bunchin' lot of folks devoted a lot to the Grorg.

I did create a thread, now buried on page 10^120th power for the purpose of sharing info about what happened and venting all the pent up feelings that I KNOW are still out there - see History of the Grorg - what happened?. It just didn't seem appropriate to put my comment there when I was responding to a post here. Had I gone on a ranting, frothing diatribe I would have put my comments there and just posted a link to/from this thread.

I understand the desire to put what happened at Grorg behind us. If you think that everything went as well as could be expected and don't harbor any negative feelings about it - that's wonderful. But for those of us that don't have such a forgiving nature and take a more negative view of the attitudes and motivations of UD, the healthiest thing to do is get those feelings out and share them with others who understand.

If you're angry about something - anything - the worst thing you can do is try to suppress it. And if you're not angry, then the rest of us won't mind if you ignore us.

Personally, I will do my best to put any negative comments in my Grorg thread. But for short responses that aren't more than simply a bit backhanded, I don't think putting them here should be at all disruptive or intrusive.

Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

I wasnt really talking about you persoanly. Actually, I think there is an underpinning of decent caused by those who feel the whole grid.org issue is mostly fake. They are somewhat misslead as to fall prey to mob extreamisum, but feel strong in their conviction just the same.

The only creadibity i can give to those is that the disaster we faced was not that we were decieved, it was the speed in which had for departure and complete lack transitional support. But I only bring this up as it describes the primary point for why this thread was needed. To help point the way for those who didnt have a safe harbor yet.

Re: Un-official Grid.org Refugee Transition Center.

My transition from grid.org to WCG, while very frustrating at first, has allowed me to feel part of a community instead of just crunching on my own. The boinc agent has also allowed me to bring two linux boxes into the fold, including a fairly new machine which significantly increases my previous grid.org contribution. I also added a machine this weekend which I am an admin on, but had not previously used when it is idle (about 16 hours a day), largely due to a comparison cargod01 made between P4 and Xeon processors. I expect this one dual Xeon 3.2ghz machine might make a "slight" change to my prior averages.
While there is frustration at the thought that the last 6+ months at grid.org may have been just spinning wheels, this thought makes me that much more committed to adding crunchers to the WCG fold and making a difference here.

Welcome Jal2!! smile
I was in the top 100 all-time crunchers at grid.
Even though they didn't communicate what advances our efforts were producing very well; I refuse to consider the time I spent there as a waste.
While we may never know what our efforts really produced, we gave it our best effort.
I think the way this site is run, they'll be around much longer and the research will be put to good use.
Good luck with the dual Xeon! It should pump units out like mad!!
I may need to hijack another 40 P4s to keep up! LOL
