BTW -- how do you edit a post? In the UD client it was a simple matter of clicking on an "edit" button. But there doesn't seem to be such an option with BOINC.

Command Line equivalent? Don't tell me u have not yet upgraded to the 5.8.x with standard GUI interface yet. Boinc jobs, like most other batch tasks, have absolutely no need to bloat their machine with a GUI. The machine I run boinc on is a server which has no need of any GUI and therefore is unlikely to ever have X loaded on it. So, no, it has no GUI and it doesn't need one. |

BTW, this is pretty lame. If WCG screws up. it would be nice if they would: a) Inform users, not just have their machines wasting days of CPU on nothing and b) Give instructions as to how to correct the problem, not just tell everyone to go read the manual. That's lame. |

Try http://www.oook.cz/bsd/boinc_curses/ :) I don't use standard GUI either... but KBoincMgr :P |

Thanks D_T_G... bookmarked it for the next case where the 2+2 calculus fails at WCG.... or was it complex science that can have unexpected snags developing
---------------------------------------- @Kremmen For good order WCG will not contact clients unless in the highest exception and only if the personal profile permits. From that perspective it is deplorable but unavoidable that computers at times will 'waste' cpu time. WCG recommends to upgrade to 5.8.15 so that the new feature to cancel failing jobs with a remote instruction can be transmitted upon 1st contact initiated by the client.

And the client might take ages to contact the server. Wouldn't it have been more sensible to simply tell users to run something such as "boinc_cmd --project http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/ update" ? Why keep it all obscure and make everyone look it up for themselves? |

Are the work units bigger, or is the fix causing sharply increased runtime for each WU? It's much longer than the usual 4 to 6 hours to run one now, more like 10 hours.
Just curious, really. |

After doing that, and getting some other projects, I now see GC version 5.14 workunits 1445 and higher downloaded. I will see how they go.
----------------------------------------They may be setting workunits with longer breaks. I used to run one in about 1 hour on this computer. The new estimates are 4.5 hours.

This forum has a pencil and paper icon in the upper left of your message. The word "edit" is also there, but helpfully is in white to make it easier (?) to read on a white or gray background. I had already upgraded to version 5.8.15, and still it wasted nearly 28 hours of computing time.
