Well no, believe now for at least one more build to come.... in the meantime an upgrade in 30 seconds could have had you have the best available of the stable alpha's since March 7.....your choice. You mean 5.9.3? ![]() |

I just see that 5.8.17 for Linux has been promoted to 'Recommended, but still think there will be another point release to introduce a separate buffer size parameter in addition to the 'connect schedule'.... e.g. 6 days buffer, but connect every day to produce 6 days in the Task queue.
----------------------------------------The numbering is predetermined where the uneven numbers after the main are true developers versions. Should only be used by testers that report back any problems to BOINC dev. 5.9.3 is Not supported at WCG! How historically the versions looked and future looks: Testing/Developing series: 5.5.x 5.7.x 5.9.x 5.11.x Those suitable for production. 5.4.x 5.6.x 5.8.x 5.10.x 5.12.x The production versions can still have bugs and are marked as 'may be unstable', but eventually will progress to 'Recommended' on a following point release. Those are the once for people who want to 'set and forget' as much as possible. In near future BOINC will have in-house simulation facilities so that things can be tested much more thoroughly like the scheduler to prevent issues like we had with the 5.8 series and work drying up unexpectedly.

Kathryn over at BOINC dev forum started a collection of many of the changes that over time were introduced for the progressing versions.... 5.8.16 had in fact quite a few:

.... and to top it of for today on the subject a post about the Linux 5.8.17 benchmark:
----------------------------------------Message 9352 - Posted 4 Apr 2007 22:35:26 UTC Yes there was a change. A more recent version of the gcc compiler is used, getting better optimizations and in turn more accurate benchmarks. By default it uses glibc 2.4. I think it's possible, but not so easy, for the developers to use a new compiler with an older glibc. I was unable to install 5.8.17 on Ubuntu Dapper, which is Ubuntu's "Long Term Support" version; I guess a lot of people run that version. So I suggested going at least one version back, that is, using glibc 2.3 on BOINC. Meanwhile, you could try out BOINC 5.8.16 (packages for all versions can be found on http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dl/). I think it would be far easier than trying to get a newer glibc working on your system...

Bookmared, thanks. In the near future I will try to get as possible familiar with that, since I have just became a boinc alpha tester.

The latest has an issue with integer benchmark on dual core. I'm seeing wild variations on mine. Flops is fine..... sometimes it's required to run the benchmark 5/6/7 times before getting a proper value (i only bother when i see it, because others get upset for having been paired with a low claimer ;>). Those running on Vista also seem to have an issue getting half of the normal.
----------------------------------------Not heard of a solution yet, but putting BOINC.exe 1 priority level up from normal, will give it more CPU cycle allocation during the test, without it impacting the the system (BOINC.exe only uses seconds per day).

How can I update my version of BOINC to 5.8.x? Do I have to overwrite the old version with the new? And how do I connect the new version to the projects the old one is working on?
I'm asking because I had a lot of trouble to get version 5.4.11 working, and it will run correctly only as far as the client is concerned, running the manager seems to cause computation errors. |

In principle the installer takes care of the closing of the old agent, if still running, and installs the new one over it. All your projects, settings, work is preserved.

Just to avoid misunderstandings: I should run the old client while installing the new one, so that the new one can find my projects and settings? |
