Hi, I would just like to that everyone involved for the putting the effort into addressing the claimed and granted credit under GNU/Linux.
---------------------------------------- I have had BOINC 5.8.8 on my system for around a month and am about to upgrade to BOINC 5.8.11. I have noticed a definite improvement in my claimed and granted credit under Linux, certainly enough to keep to keep this casual cruncher happy Before I was usually claiming lower than the granted credit, now I consistantly claim higher, and the granted credit is usually higher than before as well. So to everyone running Linux who hasn't upgraded yet, do it it is well worth your while. [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Feb 24, 2007 11:59:08 AM] |

I think I have noticed that as well. But I don't remember how big clamed credits I had with 5.4.11, now have 5.8.11 and recently have almost always twice bigger clamed credits than all the others
---------------------------------------- even if others have similiar cpu time (so I guess +/- the same performance). So because of me others are granted with more credits than clamed, but me - less ![]() [BOINC client version 5.8.11 for i686-pc-linux-gnu (c2d e6400; OpenSUSE 10.2/krnl 2.6.20)] ---------------------------------------- [Edit 2 times, last edit by D_T_G at Feb 24, 2007 11:44:21 PM] |

Like the OP says and proposes, if the Linux members want to make use of improved claim calculation, upgrading to 5.8.11 is required. If double from before (Linux standard used to be approx 55% of the windows claim), than a near double is possible.

5.8.15 was just promoted by BOINC developers as the recommended version for all 3 platforms (Windows, MAC, Linux). If not upgraded already......
----------------------------------------![]() Added: 5.8.16 is about to come out with predominantly MAC fixes per the CVS log.

Looks like the claimed/granted and windows/linux differences are still a factor. These are identical machines running the same version of Boinc at the same time. The only difference is one is running Fedora Core 6 x86_64 and the other Windows Server 2003 R2. Looks like the linux penalty is still with us even if it is caused by our fellow linux crunchers not upgrading and dragging us down!.

Let me bring this up with knreed, but only if cases of 'Outlier' penalty are observed stemming from old and new agents meeting up.
----------------------------------------The interim solution was to prevent 'outlier' deduction if old agent joined with new agents. In this case though the median is below the mean i.e. the penalty is strictly due other clients not having upgraded. The March 2007 newsletter circulated a few days ago promotes the new agent, so hopefully sooner rather than later the other Linux crunchers also upgrade....post the need on team threads and where communicating to proliferate the knowledge and need. cheers

Hello all,
----------------------------------------Why not just change the credit system to a fixed one like more and more projects through BOINC ? We would not being discussing again and again of this quorum issues... Just an idea, but you should consider predicting number of calculations per wu and then put inside a fixed granted credit for it. Then, no matter which OS or which computer calculates the wu, and nor matter the quorum... only efficiency should be taken into account for credits granted. I am not crunching WCG because of this issues. I would like but i think the way this project gives credits is no more good. I will be back with 14 cpu cores when the crediting system is improved with Boinc agent [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Mar 19, 2007 9:07:39 AM] |

Unlike Celtar, I have no complaints with the quorum system, as long as it works.
Problem is, my fast machines with new software are being penalized while slower machines who have not upgraded are being rewarded. I should load vmware on my FC6 box and run win boinc in couple of XP virtual machines! I wonder what the benchmarks would like for a PII that was faster than ever existed on silicon. ![]() |
