Re: Gold Silver Bronze

L3 cache thrashing problem on ARP mentioned in the ARP forum. Here is my experience:

I was running one of my oldest computers AMD with 8 threads at 60% CPU time and it actually filled up with 8 ARP. The download may have taken a little longer but isn't much in the grand scheme of things. Bad news. It is probably that L3 cache thrashing problem mentioned in the ARP forum. If more than a couple run simultaneously, run time gets very long. I could tell that the remaining time stayed about the same for several minutes, and then dropped a bit and did the same. They wouldn't even finish before deadline and I aborted all but one. The remaining time for the one active then dropped off in a more normal manner. I aborted one at a time and the remaining didn't look normal until I only saw one thread active with ARP. When this project was added, it only suggested 1 ARP in each of the four BOINC settings (default, home, school, work) and I am going with that, ONE ARP thread per computer. maximum.

I didn't experience that at all - my first 3 or 4 ARP1 units were running one at a time, with MIP1 running in the other slots. After that, I filled up on them and had all slots running ARP1. I only used one machine for them, which has a 10 year old 4C/8T 2nd Gen Core i7 2600 (Sandy Bridge) with 8MB L3 cache. They all ran for 36h +/- 2h irrespective of whether only one slot or all eight slots had ARP1 units in them.

Maybe they fixed something. They should, if they want some results in anytime sooner than 100 years. If the timings for a buncht weren't any worse than one, that is good news.
An old computer with 8 threads was really dragging, but I might try to load up the newer 12 thread system that runs one in about 15 hours. It might also be a difference in the way AMD and Intel handles things. AMD runs hot. I know that much.

I have been running an I7-2600k with 8gb memory at stock and it takes about 23 hours give or take 1/2 hour to complete an ARP unit. The time is about the same whether or not one unit is running or two units. The rest of the 6-7 slots are filled with MCM and MIP units. The occasional HST also runs around the same.
Cheers

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

I've decided to swap teams for a few days, the base camp trek is going to get a day or two of my time. But as the Governator says "I'll Be Back!"
Base Camp was here for a month a few years ago. That really kicked up the team. I'm just pushing out what I can 24 / 7 / 365.2425.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

For whatever reason, WCG reported that they are not sending any new work for ANYTHING and I am rapidly running out. There wasn't any warning. I have kept fairly short queues so I could get HSTB and ARP. A few of those long programs are still running and can be uploaded and reported.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

Uplinger fixed the bottleneck and work is flowing again.
He is also trying fo solve the problem so that won't happen again. It always seems to be on a Sunday.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

So far, the team has returned 479 results from the new Africa Rainfall project.
Of those, 222 are mine. Africa Rainfall and Help Stop TB are long running programs.

I saw a couple betas from FightAids@Home - Phase 2. They may be getting ready to resume. It has a very short due time of 24 hours because the next one may depend on the one done before so they do not want to spread out the work too far. This project does not have a wingman and even has partial uploads to make sure you are progressing error free. These will take over the computer, so don't use all of your threads for this if you have other things waiting. They may also add a bunch more candidates to the original FA@H and do some more.

Widdershins is off helping Base Camp pile on to another team. Hopefully he will return to help the vultures.

One computer is running 7 simultaneous Africa Rainfall and I do not see anything unusual. They are all completing in about the same time as usual.

They are also planning to do a lot more Phase 1 next year to add candidates from a larger library. That will also then go to Phase 2 eventually.
