Re: Gold Silver Bronze

SCC has run out, so there is a gap in that project until they make more, which will be a more typical length. I pushed the team up a few points in results because I was only running the short SCC for about 25 days.

Total Run Time (y:d:h:m:s) (Rank) 1248:223:12:15:59 (#121)
Points Generated (Rank) 1,552,552,405 (#122)
Results Returned (Rank) 3,226,834 (#114)

You're welcome.
Those short SCC were fun while it lasted, as small as 90 seconds each. I did the same thing.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

I sent out an e-mail to the team with that feature that came from beacon@worldcommunitygrid.org
It invited publicity to get more members. Actually, nobody has joined this team for awhile. I mentioned the team page for two links that should be used to get new people to this team, one for WCG members and one if not.
I found them in my contribution page, actually.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

SCC is still in their project gap, waiting for new material.
Open Zika is essentially finished with nothing coming down the pipe.
HSTB gives a workunit rarely.
MIP has plenty of work.
MCM has plenty of work.
FA@H2 is kind of a queue hog with a short deadline, so I can only run a few at once. They will keep anything else from running unless you keep one or more open threads.
ARP is the new one, with some long running programs. They are being distributed more randomly now, not at set times. I don't see many, but I have run as many as six concurrently. This one has a large resource requirement, so check closely if you are tight on memory and disk space.

I am running 46 threads now. 8 are on an old computer at 80% CPU time and 4 are on a laptop at 50% to keep down the heat buildup.

FA@H2 is also paused until they send more work. I asked whether all of the scientists are going deer hunting. If you are only running one of these projects, you might want to check your queue.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

I’ve got all active projects up to 10 years apart from MIP1 and ARP1. I should hit 10 years on MIP1 around the end of December - currently at just over 8 years. I’ve managed to snag 63 ARP1 units to hit gold (averaged around 36 hours per unit). Once MIP1 is up to 10 years, I’ll go all out on ARP1 until I get to 10 years on that, which should hopefully be about the end of July with my 18 threads running at 100% (apart from the 4 on my work laptop which gets shutdown for my 90 minute each way commute twice per week).

Core i5-3320M (Ivy Bridge) - 2C/4T
Core2 Duo E8400 (Wolfdale) - 2C/2T

Speaking of work laptops this one runs 24/7. I have my own laptop set to run continuously on battery when I am not using it on electric power. If I want a shutdown, I have to force it. When on the road visiting family or going to an event, I just let it go on battery until it dies sometime that day. I get several more hours per day because this one has a fairly small screen and isn't a battery hog. It would probably handle a 90 minute commute easily. It will do 3-4 hours. I do run it at 50% computer power on the BOINC settings for the four threads to keep the heat level down.

L3 cache thrashing problem on ARP mentioned in the ARP forum. Here is my experience:

I was running one of my oldest computers AMD with 8 threads at 60% CPU time and it actually filled up with 8 ARP. The download may have taken a little longer but isn't much in the grand scheme of things. Bad news. It is probably that L3 cache thrashing problem mentioned in the ARP forum. If more than a couple run simultaneously, run time gets very long. I could tell that the remaining time stayed about the same for several minutes, and then dropped a bit and did the same. They wouldn't even finish before deadline and I aborted all but one. The remaining time for the one active then dropped off in a more normal manner. I aborted one at a time and the remaining didn't look normal until I only saw one thread active with ARP. When this project was added, it only suggested 1 ARP in each of the four BOINC settings (default, home, school, work) and I am going with that, ONE ARP thread per computer. maximum.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

As a side note to the above, from reading a thread in the FAH2 forum it seems there might be FAH1 WU's making a re-appearance at some point. When, and whether they'll be called FAH1, FAH3, or something else, is yet to be disclosed. If you are needing FAH1 it might be worthwhile keeping an ear to the ground in the forums.

Personally I don't think I'll be pulling down any more of those, I doubt I'd make it to 20yrs if there's only a short run, and I still have FAH2, MIP, and ARP to push up a bit.

I did see that and said over there if they are doing more FAH1 to call it FAH1 so some could do some more badge work on it.

FA@H2 is greedy in the queue and will take it over, so I have to limit the number of threads by limiting the number of them. Some runs in any project might NOT be small since some have said the docking library may be up to a billion candidates now.

All of the other work is rare. Even with 10 years each, I am doing mostly MIP and MCM to give the computers something to do.

I did note above that ARP will run longer than usual if you run it in more than one thread.

Re: Gold Silver Bronze

Yes, I did notice that ARP was a tad sluggish when I had a pile running at the same time on one machine, so backed it off and only have 3 on the go at once on each machine. I'll see how that works out.

I'm filling the vacant spaces with MIP until FAH2 comes back online. I can use the extra years of MIP since I've still got a fair ways to go to get it to 20 years, so not a massive problem.

I've decided to swap teams for a few days, the base camp trek is going to get a day or two of my time. But as the Governator says "I'll Be Back!"

I didn't experience that at all - my first 3 or 4 ARP1 units were running one at a time, with MIP1 running in the other slots. After that, I filled up on them and had all slots running ARP1. I only used one machine for them, which has a 10 year old 4C/8T 2nd Gen Core i7 2600 (Sandy Bridge) with 8MB L3 cache. They all ran for 36h +/- 2h irrespective of whether only one slot or all eight slots had ARP1 units in them.
