**Sigh**

The computer is now opened up on the operating table in the kitchen. It appears that the fans etc are all functioning normally, memtest has been running for a while and no errors so far. The fact that it's outputting that info also suggests the graphics card is working fine also. And since it's failing whilst booting and does so whether booting to linux or windows I'm starting to get a nasty feeling it's the HDD that's keeled over...

Fortunately the important stuff is backed up, but losing the unimportant stuff that didn't get backed up plus all the time/expense/general faffing around rebuilding it/sourcing the right drivers etc. is going to be a right PITA.

Of course there's no re-install disk supplied these days, it's built into a partition on the HDD that's failed...

The above plus a shortage of free time just now means my production is curtailed for the next week or so.

I'd considered the live CD route, but as the PC case isn't the most tinkerer friendly there wasn't much point. Due to the case design, to get at the HD it's pretty much impossible to leave the machine in a usable condition whilst repairing it.

The HD sits in a cradle and it's impossible to get the screws out without removing the entire cradle (cradle also holds DVD writer and spare bays). It's impossible to get the cradle out without disconnecting the MB power supply, removing one stick of memory, and a couple of other leads and some screws.

It's the first HD failure I've had, I've fished a docking cradle for an internal HD out of a cupboard, so I'll see tomorrow if anything can be salvaged.

I'm still here.....and my slide down the rankings seems to have paused but since the totals are down that is probably no-one else crunching rather than me picking up

My output is still down as my main cruncher is still undergoing repairs. Part of that is due to the good weather and me being out making the best of what limited summer we usually get here in Scotland.

A larger part however is down to the failure(s). Upon extracting the HDD I put it into an external cradle and attached it to my other computer and ran some diagnostics on it. The gist of the test reports was that I should take it out the back and shoot it to put it out of it's misery. So I quickly hooked up my external HDD and tried to salvage as much of the data as possible.

Somewhat surprisingly I managed to get most of the data off it (though I've not verified it's readable yet!). The unit stayed up for a couple of hours though it didn't sound like it enjoyed the experience much.

I also found a cloned copy of the original HDD's recovery partition and windows partition made when I first got it. I'd forgotten I had them and found them by accident when rummaging for any driver discs that came with the machine.

Armed with the above plus a new HDD of identical brand/size/type as the old one I set about rebuilding.

Pressed the power button and it began to fire up with my bootable cloning tools disc in the CD drive all ready to fill my shiny new drive with the original partition images.

Oh Oh!

It keeled over at the same point again. After much more tinkering, pulling add-on cards etc. I eventually traced it to a faulty PSU which seems to throw a tantrum now if too much power is demanded. It looks fine when ticking over in the BIOS screens but when HDD, CPU, and Graphics card are all cranking up to full power as it loads up the OS the PSU keels over and dies.

The machine was set to reboot when the power came back on in the event of a power failure to the house. Unfortunately that meant that when the PSU failed in the way it did, it constantly lost power and rebooted every 15-20sec until I came home and discovered it. Potentially up to around 2,500 times as I was out for about 14hrs that day. I suspect being powercycled like that without the proper unloading/parking of heads explains why the HD had also had enough.

New PSU is now installed plus new HD with cloned partitions and initial tests are looking good. I'm leaving it opened up on the operating table this evening though since I've decided that whilst it's opened I'll pop some more memory into it. That should arrive tomorrow.
