Boinc WU problems

Hi.

I've been happily using the Boinc agent for quite some time now, but in the last few days have had WU's that have been going 30+ hours and being less than 10% complete. This has happened on a number of machines that I'm running, all of them XP with all the latest patches. The only thing I see in the message section that's unusual is:

11/21/2006 3:52:21 PM|World Community Grid|Restarting task B05547_0073_CTMA3B2-16-14-17-c1_2 using hdc version 514
11/21/2006 3:53:56 PM||Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
11/21/2006 3:53:57 PM||Access to reference site succeeded - project servers may be temporarily down.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks.

Re: Boinc WU problems

I noticed that the server was temporarily unavailable yesterday. It's nothing to worry about, so long as it was temporary.

Are you sure the problem work units are from the HDC project? It will be useful if you can give the work unit names of specific work units that have failed like this. As far as I know, there have been one or two similar reports, but WCG have been unable to reproduce the problem.

Re: Boinc WU problems

Yes. They have all been HDC WU's. In particular the WU's have been: B05528_ 0047_ CTMA3B1-6-10-9-c2,B05517_ 0081_ CTMA3A1-6-14-24-c1, B05504_ 0073_ YTMA10B1-4-11-13-c2, and B05503_ 0248_ YTMA10B1-4-6-23-c1.

Others have been able to run these WU's with success. I can't figure out why these WU's suddenly started failing across my machines. I pretty much leave these machines alone and let them do their own thing and have not modified them in any way prior to these failures. The only differences between how these machines were configured before( when WU's seemed to work fine) and now is an update to the latest XP patch and an update to the Symentec Antivirus signatures. These updates have never bothered Boinc in any way before, so I am hesitant to blame any weirdness on the updates.

Thanks again.

Re: Boinc WU problems

Today took the plunge and updated the 2 year old router firmware to the latest, tweaked it's firewall and killed the software firewall.... CPU efficiency per BOINCview jumped > 5 points. It certainly is going to end my intermittent BOiNCmgr.exe hangs.

cheers

Re: Boinc WU problems

Such updates can and do cause problems, but pinning them down is hard.

Have you noticed anything else unusual, such as your antivirus software logging or reporting any interventions? If I recall correctly, Symantec report such things in the Windows Event Log.

Re: Boinc WU problems

I checked the AntiVirus logs for all the machines involved and didn't notice anything unusual. I have one machine crunching FAAH and it had no problems at all. Other Boinc projects seem to be unaffected on the same machines that were having problems with HDC.

Re: Boinc WU problems

Well, it's over to the WCG techs now. If you want a faster response, send email to the support address (but bear in mind it's almost Thanksgiving).

Meanwhile, make a note of any troublesome work units then abort them. Also consider removing HDC from your project selection.

Re: Boinc WU problems

I had the same issue with my recent units.
My normal process time recently is about 12 hours.

On these units it was at 12 hours or so and only 4% complete.
I aborted them. Hope this helps track down the issue/corrupted units.

Re: Boinc WU problems

See another thread, where i just resolved it for an extreme slow HPF2. It was the antivirus blocking progress, thus u might want to try to disconnect from the internet, do a full virus/spam scan. Then completely unload all antivirus and spam and firewall software and see if it starts running at normal speeds.

cheers
