Is Linux slower than windows vista? I just loaded my first attempt ever of Linux. I used Ubuntu 8.10 64bit on a new I7 920 running BOINC 6.4.7. I know this is not scientific but the I7 920 seems slower than my Q6600. on the 920 DDDT and HPF are showing an average completion time of over 9 hours and the Q6600 is showing an average completion for those two of 5 hours.

hmmm, of course you run it with Hyperthreading on, 8 jobs simultaneous on 4 real cores. That will run slower, yes.

Also, are you comparing to Vista 32 or Vista 64?
Cross-platform performance comparison is a thorny issue. |

I am comparing UBUNTU 64 to VISTA 32. It is just that I would exepect an I7 920 would do significantly more WU than a Q6600 and my initial reaction is that this new machine is slow. Both machines do WGG 24x7 with nothing else on them. They both have 2GB of RAM right now, although I have more on order for the UBMNTU 64 machine. I put on UBUNTU becasue I am tired of giving Microsoft my money and I have bought too many copies of VISTA. Since I have no expierence with Linux, I just want to make sure there is no reason why it would be slower than Vista. I did figure out how to display a system monior and nothing else is running and all eight processors show 12%.

mitch, understand that if you run 2 processes simultaneous off 1 core you wont get the same as 1 process running off 1 core. This process is not lossless. The Q6600 ran 4 cores, you now are trying to compare the performance of that with 8 running on same 4 cores. Switch off hyperthreading and then you know.

I understand that I cannot do a direct comparison, what I am interested in is the amount of work prodcued. As you know from previous posts, I have a few machines (now 18) working on WCG. I have an I7 965 that produces around 45 results a day. The new I7 920 only seens to be doing 23 results per day. My Q6600 and my Q9450 seem to do as much. I would have expected the I7 920 to be somewhere in between the I7 965 and the other two quads. I am going to dedicate this machine to WCG so I want to make sure I have it set up right. This should be my second best performing machine.
----------------------------------------Since I have no expierience with Linux, and this is the first time I have used it, I want to make sure that my exepctations are such that a Linux machine should perform as well as a Win Vista machine. I am also interested if there are any Ubuntu options I need to set. Part of the problem is that maybe I am too impatient, as I only build this machine on April 2. Maybe it needs more time to get going! - Mitch ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Do check ALAIN_13013's suggestion.

I did not realize that was a suggestion. I know nothing about linuix so I did not recognize that as commands. I am really a windows guy (DOS and OS/2....I am that old! :)).
----------------------------------------I entered the commands in a terminal emulator and a lot of stuff happened. When I tried the first command I got an error, "Continue without valid swap". I replied no, is that the right response. The second command had no errors. Thanks, Mitch ![]() ![]() ![]() |

I think I read somewhere that you have to tell Linux to explicitly use 100% of the processor, otherwise it throttles back because BOINC runs at a low priority. If I can find the thread, I will put the link in.
