Re: Linux seems slow

Steve
I would like to get some numbers about soft page faulting for HCC under Linux.
Something like
Ubuntu 64 8.10 / Boinc 6.2.15 / xxx,xxx pf/s/task / Processor / CPU Clock

But I think you are currently running Vista, no? smile

Note to others: please do not start yet, and certainly not in this thread. I shall start a dedicated thread when I am ready and when HCC is back to its usual error free mode.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Linux seems slow

I am not an expert in processors but I think I have read that the i7 is designed for running on a triple channel for memory, and although it is not a must (it can work with other memory configurations) it is probably much more efficient when you run it the way it has been optimized. Particularly with our applications which are CPU bound and are accessing memory full speed, full time.

Opinions from processor experts are welcome. smile

Cheers. Jean.

PS: Mitch, if you agree, I will probably ask you to do a few tests later when the current HCC problem is over.

I think you might be right. I thought the one card with 2GB was ok becuase the system monitor showed I was only using one meg. The only change I made was to add two more memory cards for a total of three to take full advantage of the I7 and it seems to have doubled the performance. I need to watch it for a couple more days to make sure.

SInce this is the first time I have ever loaded Linux I thought that might have been the problem but it looks like it is ok.

I would be glad to run some tests if you would like. I have two I7s right now. I7 965 running Vista Ultimate 64 and and I7 920 running Ubuntu 64 8.10.
