Re: Linux seems slow

Mitch,
Access to the Synaptic package manager is in System->Administration, sixth item, just above Printing (sorry for being a little vague, my Ubuntu is in French).

After having entered your password use the search facility on "ia32" to see if ia32-libs is installed, and if not, then request it and install it. It is usually very easy and fast.

Cheers. Jean.

Re: Linux seems slow

I don't think tasks will run at all without the right library.

But my memory is fuzzy - this hasn't come up in a while.

Actually the 11th thing down! ia32-libs, ia32-java5-bin, ia32-java6-bin are all installed.

Re: Linux seems slow

try
sudo cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu?/cpufreq/*

I think there's a file which lets you set whether to include idle processes in the frequency scaling or not. Let's see how your's is configured. If that's active, it will greatly decrease your cpu speed for idle tasks.

Depending on how you run boinc, you might hit this kernel bug:
http://linux-tipps.blogspot.com/2009/04/dos-in-linux-server-with-boinc.html
Thus avoid using schedtool and ionice at the moment. Unless your kernel is 2.6.29 or newer or already patched.

Re: Linux seems slow

I am running UBUNTU 8.10 so I do not think this is my problem. The last couple of days, it seems that my machine has sped up. I was getting only 17 results per day. I had 2GB of memoy and system monitor showed only 960 mb used at 50% with 0% swap. This was one chip on an I7 920. I then upgraded to three 2GB chips for 6GB. The last tow days I have done 38 results each day, Double what I was getting before.

I do not know why the memory upgrade impacted my performance when System Monitor showed only 50% memory utilization with 2 GB, but 38 results a day is what I would expect for a I7 920.

I will need to monitor it for a couple more days.

Re: Linux seems slow

I really have only CEP selected becasue I am trying to get over one year of credit on CEP, but do to the lack of workunits, It is getting work from all projects, even though they are not selected. I know with eight tasks running there can be some issues. I also have an I7 965 and it gets in the high 40s results per day. I am expecting this machine to be my second fastest machine and would expect in the high 30s per day, like I got the last couple of days.

Re: Linux seems slow

I am not an expert in processors but I think I have read that the i7 is designed for running on a triple channel for memory, and although it is not a must (it can work with other memory configurations) it is probably much more efficient when you run it the way it has been optimized. Particularly with our applications which are CPU bound and are accessing memory full speed, full time.

Opinions from processor experts are welcome. smile

Cheers. Jean.

PS: Mitch, if you agree, I will probably ask you to do a few tests later when the current HCC problem is over.

I am not an expert either but Jean is correct ... with 1 mem card you were crippling the capabilities of your i7.

Jean - in your request to have Mitch run some tests, if this is in regards to projects / processor/ results combinations, I would be willing to participate if you think I am a suitable candidate, i7 920 (OC stable 3.8 GHz), 6 GB RAM (3 banks 2 gb each) w/ Vista Ultimate 64 running WCG and GPUGrid 24/7 on BOINC 6.6.20 alpha.

edit: added boinc version
