I think I read somewhere that you have to tell Linux to explicitly use 100% of the processor, otherwise it throttles back because BOINC runs at a low priority. If I can find the thread, I will put the link in. http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=23087#223133 Cheers

Another thought. With only 2gb of memory and 8 jobs running, you may be memory bound. Depends if they are all the same type of job too.

Ubuntu runs low-priority tasks, like BOINC projects, at slow clock speed to reduce heat. You have to set the performance options to run BOINC at full clock speed. That is the meaning of ALAIN_13013's cryptic suggestion. He offers the solution without explaining the problem that he is solving.

Re: Boinc slower on Linux? Reply to this Post
----------------------------------------Reply with Quote [Delete this Post] -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I agree that 2gb is less than I want, I have another four on order and should arrive tuesday. According to Sysmon I am only using 1gb. Also sysmon shows each of the cpus at 12% so I think I am ok. I tried cpufreq-selector -g performacne but I got an error "caller not authorized" I may be making it worse. I am now getting a whole lot of errors. This is over a 5 hour period earlier today, but I now got two valid after this bunch of errors. I am not ready to give up on Linux yet. It is mcuh better than giving Micrsoft a whole lot of money if I can figure out how to get this to work. Mitch,
----------------------------------------While I look for which libraries might be missing in your setup, would you please delete your same post in the "Boinc slower on Linux?" thread before somebody answers it. Actually it is no longer a matter of slower or not, so it might have deserved a new thread. Anyway... Thank in advance. Jean. |

Sorry about that, I got confused as to which thread I was in. I deleted the post. The install for Ubuntu seemed to go ok when I originally did it.

sudo cpufreq-selector -g performance
This is a good way of doing it, but isn't permanent. If you want to use this method, you will have to add the command to a startup script somewhere. A third alternative is to change your BIOS settings to permanently set it to maximum. |

Thanks for telling me I need sudo in front of cpufreq-selector -g performance. I tried that and got "no cpufreq support". What BIOS parm are you suggesting, I am more familiar with BIOS than Linux.
----------------------------------------Using System Monitor, which I discovverd, all 8 CPUs show at 100%. Under Processes, each of the eight WCG tasks show at 11% or 12%. No other processes show activity except the monitor occasionally at 1%. Memory shows 960mb used 0% swap, so I do not thing this is an issue. Only BOINC is running on this machine. ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Mitch, While I look for which libraries might be missing in your setup I hope I have got the right info. Didactylos will hopefully correct me if I am wrong. ![]() Mitch, you should check with Synaptic that you have the ia32-libs package installed. Otherwise several WCG 32-bit applications will fail in a 64-bit environment. Cheers. Jean. |

I have no idea what you are talking about. Sorry about my ignorance on Linux. What is Synaptic.
