I am running the BOINC 5.72 client on an AMD Athlon 3200+ with 1GB of memory.
It downloaded an HDC work unit today in over 12 hours, the WU has only performed 2 hours of CPU time. In looking at windows task manager, the unit is sitting at about 268K of memory and is using 0% CPU over long periods of time. Is this normal or is something wrong? 11/10/2006 5:04:06 AM||Starting BOINC client version 5.7.2 for windows_intelx86 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||log flags: task, file_xfer, sched_ops 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Libraries: libcurl/7.15.5 OpenSSL/0.9.8a zlib/1.2.3 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Data directory: C:\Program Files\BOINC 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Processor: 1 AuthenticAMD AMD Athlon(tm) XP 3200+ 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Memory: 1023.48 MB physical, 2.41 GB virtual 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Disk: 149.05 GB total, 100.06 GB free 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM|World Community Grid|URL: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/; Computer ID: 82137; location: (none); project prefs: default 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 2006-11-09 08:01:56) 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Host location: none 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||General prefs: using your defaults 11/10/2006 5:04:07 AM||Reading preferences override file 11/10/2006 5:04:08 AM|World Community Grid|Restarting task B10221_0067_CTMA3D2-13-11-8-c1_0 using hdc version 514 11/10/2006 5:08:08 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user 11/10/2006 5:08:08 PM|World Community Grid|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks) 11/10/2006 5:08:14 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 507] 11/10/2006 5:08:14 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 2006-11-10 11:44:49) 11/10/2006 5:08:14 PM||Host location: none 11/10/2006 5:08:14 PM||General prefs: using your defaults 11/10/2006 5:08:14 PM||Reading preferences override file 11/10/2006 5:09:52 PM||Removing account manager info 11/10/2006 5:10:13 PM|World Community Grid|Sending scheduler request: Requested by user 11/10/2006 5:10:13 PM|World Community Grid|(not requesting new work or reporting completed tasks) 11/10/2006 5:10:16 PM|World Community Grid|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 507] 11/10/2006 5:10:16 PM||General prefs: from World Community Grid (last modified 2006-11-10 11:44:49) 11/10/2006 5:10:16 PM||Host location: none 11/10/2006 5:10:16 PM||General prefs: using your defaults 11/10/2006 5:10:16 PM||Reading preferences override file |

Hello jgoldsti,
It is only normal if some other process is running on your system. Task Monitor lists the System Idle Task at the bottom. Is it maxed out at 98-100%? If not, what other process is showing a lot of activity? Lawrence |

Yes, system idle task was using up almost all the CPU and the memory commit was about 800M and there was plenty of free disk space. I found that the global preferences override file was set to write to disk max time 60 seconds. I raised this to 999 seconds and stopped/started BOINC and the application is running normally.

Just finished the 3rd HDC v 5.14 on the BOINC 5.72 alpha agent without trouble. As we are on heavy batches these days, the Threesome took a total of 14 hrs CPU time (HT 2.53ghz)
----------------------------------------That said, the box is now so tweaked that, touch wood, its not noticeable that HDC is crunching with a streaming radio channel from Seattle on! Yep the 999 seconds can do wonders. It's not in the 5.7.2 simple view interface pref settings, but Rom Walton promised that a future version would have lots more prefs to regulate locally without having to resort to text editors :) ketch u laeter
