I'm looking to buy or build a new machine this coming year (07) as a present to myself. Since 98 % or more of my machine use (24/7) is here at WCG I want to dedicate this new machine to same.
I am looking for votes/recommendations on the best build for max production on WCG (HDC and other WU's). I am leaning to an AMD, X2, Pacificia processor (built in VT hardware), AM2 mount, 2-4 GB memory (would like to expand to 6 GB), two SATA HD 100GB-up, since ADM recently bought ATI I'm waiting to see if they will open up more so like NVIDIA for Linux since it will use Linux dual boot. Off the shelf standard components. Will an off shelf gaming machine kick butt ? I cannot afford to buy a Gray Super on SS. PaulT I will take all recommendations/experiences/best guesses with a grain of salt ! Remember it's for WCG at home, production. |

Hi PaulT.
My opinion, for what it is worth, would be to go for an Intel core 2 duo. The E6400 represents probably the best bang for the buck on the market right now, specially if overclocking. This could change tomorrow. Best check when u are ready to buy. One thing that wont change tomorrow is that unless you are a keen gamer you would be wise to steer clear of 'off the shelf gaming machines' the GPU will represent most of your investment in one of these and add absolutely nothing to your crunching ability at WCG. The quantity of RAM you are planning to use will likewise be overkill atm. I'd look to quality more than quantity and again overclock it. 2Gig should do a very adequate job even with the large HDC projects. The base memory requirements for these have been reduced since their introduction and I believe further work is being undertaken to keep that under control. That's the best I can offer for now. More projects are on the way very soon but we don't know what system requirements will be for them yet. Cheers. ozylynx |

Hi PTabolinsky
I game quite a lot online ( usually Unreal Tournament 2003 ) and this is my spec, whilst not cutting edge anymore it's more than adequate for my uses. It even crunches work units reasonably quickly. I'd agree with Ozzy that 2 gig of ram is pretty good unless you have a specific app that needs more in the region of 4 gig. I'd spend the rest of my dosh on better graphics card or processor cooling. The gaming p.c's sold here in the UK usually compromise on something and if you are careful and ask on some of the forums that specialise in high end p.c's you can usually cost for cost you can build slightly better yourself. A good idea would be to drop in to the extreme systems team thread and post a hello how are you and do you mind helping me with some advice please, sort of question as those guys have some really extreme and fast pc's. Here's my spec by the way Operating System : Simply Mepis 6.0-1 ( Linux ) Processor : Intel P4 D630 EM64T HT 3.0 Ghz Mobo : ECS 865PE-A7 Memory : 2 Gig DDR400 Graphics : Nvidia Geforce FX 5600 using nvidia-glx Monitor : Emprex LM1904 19" widescreen LCD monitor Sound : Onboard 6 channel ICH15 ( Duplex ) Cooling : Akasa AK-920 Evo 120 Cooler Fan ( Gas Evaporation ) Drives : /dev/hda Maxtor 6E030L0 30 Gig : /dev/hdb Seagate ST313032A 13 Gig CD Writer : /dev/hdc Samsung CD-R/RW SW-W162C DVD Writer : /dev/hdd TssT Corp CD/DVDW SH-W162C Mouse : M$ Intellieye 3 Button Wheel Mouse ( Optical USB ) Keyboard :M$ 105 Key Soft keyboard PS/2 English-uk layout Cheers Jacko |

Hi PTabolinsky,
I'm with ozylynx. Looking at performance per dollar, Core 2 is hard to beat. Right now, more than 2 GB of RAM is hard to justify except for special cases. Beware of virtual machine hardware. It potentially allows malware to install itself as the default hypervisor unless there is already one running. Next decade I expect almost every machine that comes with a pre-installed OS will also have a default hypervisor. But right now we are just starting off with the 'Which comes first? The chicken or the egg?' situation, leaving the hypervisor slot open. Some people will be burnt. Lawrence |

Hi again PaulT
----------------------------------------Just a little extra note here. As stated before, I go quality before quantity with everything. Any computer you build or buy will be redundant in an alarmingly short time. Quality can be pushed beyond normal life expectancy as required. i.e. 4 DIMM slots with 2 1 GIG sticks of ram allows another 2 sticks to be added later if needed. I always remember buying a Cyrix(yes that's IBM) 6x86 PR 200+ with 32Meg of ram and having all my chat buddies completely puzzled as to how I was going to use all that power. {edit} This machine was essentially redundant within 6 weeks with the introduction of MMX and was nearly unusable thanks to software that wouldn't install because it insisted that I have a Pentium processor, even though it would run rings around the Pentiums of the time.{end edit} That's life with computers Cheers. ozylynx [Edit 1 times, last edit by Former Member at Nov 11, 2006 2:21:47 AM] |

I would go with Intel instead of AMD, Core is definitely great.

See for some posts here by David Autumns and the newest of newest AMD low energy CPU. It's worth considering with electricity cost on the rampant.

Ozylynx,
----------------------------------------Might you mean obsolete rather than redundant. Redundancy for some items is a good thing, i.e. Stratus(fully redundant power supplies, disks etc.) Cheers Sgt.Joe Minnesota Crunchers

Yep Sarge. I did mean obsolete.
Not to worry, I think the message was there somewhere. Cheers. ozylynx |

Speaking of obsolete, isn't all of the above NOW obsolete? The Intel quad cores are out, and the AMD quad cores aren't far behind.
----------------------------------------For crunching power (I am now #650 in WCG for points) and submitted results (#736), I have three cheaper AMD machines instead of one high end Intel machine. The clock speed seems slower at 2.4GHz, but they will keep up with a 3.0GHz Intel due to better floating point power, which is heavily used on these scientific workunits. In any event for either AMD or Intel, go for a true dual core machine or quad core machine these days, since an Intel hyperthreaded machine only has one floating point unit and two virtual CPUs sharing it.
