After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

Hello,

first of all, forgive me if this has been brought up and answered somewhere else.

Here's the problem: yesterday, after almost a month of running the agent all the time (on a very good machine, BTW), I decided I'd customize the work days for my unit, at least for a while. I entered the selected operation time: from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m.

It is now past 1. a.m. (of the second day, mind you!), and the agent is still "idle due to device profile settings". It has been like that for more than 24 hours.

Needless to say, I checked and rechecked the profile - everything makes sense. (And no, it's not a firewall - or any other technical problem on the part of my PC.)

What is causing this, and how do I make the agent run again?

Thanks!

cool Re: After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

I have never played with this before, but nobody else is stepping up to bat, so. . . Suppose you set Tuesday to "Run All Day". Will it show the correct number of hours for Run Time tomorrow when you check it? This is just an experiment to see if you can get it to run at all with your profile customized. All I can think of is experimentation like this.

Experimentally,
Lawrence

Re: After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

Kalisto,

A couple of things to check. The time that you schedule the agent to run is the time based on the local clock for the computer on which it runs. Check the clock on that computer and make sure that it is set to the correct time.

For example, if you schedule your agent to run by selecting 1AM to 2PM on the website and you live in Chicago, then the agent will run from 1AM CST - 2PM CST (assuming your computer clock is set correctly - including being set to the correct timezone). Let me know what OS you are running if you need instructions on how to check the date/time/timezone for your computer.

Secondly, the agent only the retrieves the profile settings from the website when it connects to retrieve a work unit. This means that if you change your settings on the website, the agent will not fetch the new settings until the next time it sends back a work unit. The best way to force the agent to re-retrieve the information from the website is to uninstall and re-install the agent. This will cause a second agent to be listed under your devices. Give this a try and see if it runs as expected afterwords.

In any event, please post and let me know what happens.

Thanks

Re: After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

Thank you, Lawrence.
I tried that the day before yesterday, but the agent remained "idle" - hour after hour.
I will, however, try again.

Hello - and thanks!

The time is OK.
I thought of reinstalling the agent - and now I will definitely try it!

Thanks. :)

smile Re: After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

Right, here's what I've done: I've uninstalled and then reinstalled the agent. Because of a message reporting a "fatal error" (which wasn't all that "fatal", it seems), I appear to have installed it twice.
The first time I did this the same message appeared: "Agent is idle due to profile settings" (or something like that). So I uninstalled it, changed the customized times (to see immediately whether it was working or not), and then reinstalled the agent.
Right now it seems to be working fine (because the current time is within the customized operation time "zone").

I have a question or two, though.
First of all, I have now 5 devices, and there seems to be no way to delete or uninstall the "extras". (There is another, new thread addressing this same issue, so I'll be watching that one.)

Anyway, I have reset them to a "single profile".
But I wonder - and this may sound as a stupid question, I know - does EACH of the devices occupy the amount of RAM given to the original device? (In other words, if there were 100 GB of RAM allotted to the original device - would the 5 devices now occupy 500 GB of RAM in total?

I ask this because of a very significant change in the comparison data: before I had uninstalled and reinstalled the agent , the "overall performance" CONSISTENTLY showed around 126 (never below 114) points for my device.
Now, it shows 86 points for my device - or 14 points BELOW the comparison device. (And it has been at that value ever since the first unistall/reinstall.)

This, I think, is very significant.
What could it be causing it?

Thanks!

:)

My understanding is your CPU relative performance is assessed by a software agent each time a new WU is started. The value of the assessment is gated by how much CPU time the agent can get just as the new WU is started. So, if your CPU is busy at that time, assessment is less.

cool Re: After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

Kallisto, I had the same puzzling rating when I first installed my WCG Agent. It gave my processor a very low rating. After the first Work Unit it jumped up and has stayed in the same approximate rating ever since. This rating is given by a software test that is run occasionally to see how much processor power is devoted to the project and can be affected quite severely by other programs running in the foreground. Over time it should all work out.

Congratulations on getting a handle on your problem!! After 2 weeks (??) the non-running devices should age off your page, though the data base will always remember them.

Re: After "customizing", the agent is "idel" all the time

Thanks Lawrence...:)
The thing is, this is the FIRST time I've experienced such a low rating. In the past three weeks (since I joined) I returned 12 results, with 7516 points to date. And the rating never dropped below 114. Moreover, the only variations of the rating were 114 and 126/127 points.

And I am not sure yet that my handling of the problem deserves any praise..:)
Right now, the agent is apparently active - but after a few hours of operation it's still at 0% - whereas before I had at least 20-30% done at this point.

Anyway: thanks!
