Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Was wondering when someone was going to get that 8 core monster and crunch with it. Been eye balling it for my next build. Let us know how it does. You plan on OCing it? Also looking at the hex cores for a third of the price too. If those high core xeons were not so costly, I would build another dully. A pair of 12 core/24 threads would be sweet. Have to win the lottery but then I would build with the 18 core monsters.

Initial reports 11,000 Boinc points per day, last two days vs 7,000 for I7-4930. Not overclocked yet.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

My dual Opteron 6180 machine does 100k-120k per day on Linux for reference. Guess that would be 14k-17k Boinc ppd. Uses 400w doing it though. I don't mind the power draw so much in the wintertime as it makes for a mini room heater.

I did not realize the Opteron was so efficient. What did a single Opertron 6180 cost?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Bought all the parts used and put together the system. $100-200 each for the CPU's.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Have thought about a quad AMD build but AMD processors suck to much juice to run. AMD was supposed to come out with new server processors but haven't seen them yet.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I might have to put a little crimp in production for a while. Thursday night, I went to bed early and just as I was getting to sleep, my wonderful Better Half came and said she had turned up the thermostat because the house was getting chilly. Nothing happened. So I got up and dressed and went to check the furnace. The blower motor that helps to expel the exhaust gases was red hot and not functioning - bound up.
We had installed this furnace when natural gas came to our area about 16 years ago. We replaced an old oil burning furnace. The new natural gas furnace was one of the 90+ efficient models and certainly saved more than its cost in fuel over the years. It cost about $2000.00 at the time. Never gave us a hint of trouble in all those years.
Needless to say, I had to call out a service tech in the middle of the night to see if we could get the furnace running. Once he got here and did a little investigation, it turns out the furnace itself was shot. Not only would it have cost about $800 to replace the part which failed, but the heat exchanger had cracks in all three of the chambers. This meant the furnace was a carbon monoxide accident in the making. I do have carbon monoxide detectors but they never triggered, but it would only have been a matter of time, possibly a short time before they would have. So it turns out the part failing was a blessing in disguise.
After finding this out, I discussed with the service tech the options for a new furnace. Much to my chagrin it turns out they have gone up in price somewhat since we got the last one. (Not like computer power.) So, for a little over $5000 a replacement could be purchased and installed the next morning. So the next day a new furnace was installed. It took from about 9:00 in the morning to after 7:00 at night to complete the installation.
So now I have a shiny new furnace, a warm house and a hole in my wallet, but at least we now have safe heat.
Stay safe everyone.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Ou dear Joe shock

So nice to hear that you are all fine.

CO is sure something not to underestimate. On local vocal vocabulary it is known as silent assassin.
Old folks did teach me that when ever there is new valve on chimney, it need to take to backyard and let it through with moose-caliber.
Current legistlation make it easier allowing only construction where there is hole covering 3% from total area of flue, when valve is totally closed. So kind of modern bullet hole here on every garage by default.

Sorry did not have time to chat during challenge, kind of drowning to my jobs once again.
Might sound bad, but actually really comfy scenario here on latest Northern on current economical climate. I sure do not have lot to complain.

Cheers fellows!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Very lucky nothing happened to your family. No warranty left on old furnace? They are not cheap, thats for sure. We have our inspected ever couple years to insure nothing like this happens. Wallet may hurt but you can sleep safe now, which is what counts.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

So glad you're safe. What a scary event, and so lucky your wife noticed. But it would take a bite out of the bank account.
