Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Well, this is good news for me. It looks as if the big speed difference between the new AMD A10-5700 and my old AMD Phenom II on SN2S is Linux vs Windows:
http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread_thread,34051

I'd wondered whether it could be that SN2S was way slower on Windows, and that's what others are finding. When I was running all CFSW, the A10-5700 was only about 10% slower than the Phenom. I haven't yet set up dual boot on the A10-5700 (and I may not since it's primarily my husband's machine), so I can't make the OS comparison directly.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Hello everyone. Well I have not been on a team before but have decided its finally time. Currently living in MN for the last 4 years or so...

My contribution has increased significantly since the GPU project came live, so looking forward to helping make a difference here. Cheers!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Welcome to the team Ryan222h. Glad to welcome another Minnesotan to crunch with us. Yes the GPU wu's has help allot. My highest total daily points since the GPU wu's started is a 281,410 points. What kind of GPU are you using?

Hey teammates, what's your highest daily points since GPU crunching started?

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I don't have any gpu cards recent enough to be able to qualify to run HCC on gpu. But I did get a range extender (used $50) to extend my network so I do not have to move my modem every three days to hook up my systems running in an outbuilding. Connectivity is passable with only one system being a little balky - if it does not get internet access when it it requests it it will throw all the running tasks into a computation error status and start new ones. So for this one system I still need to manually change the activity allowed/suspended setting once a day to to accomplish the uploads and downloads. I am guessing there is some setting in Linux to compensate for this problem, but I have not researched it yet.
Also you were right Bearcat. The Poweredge 2950 has support up through Clovertown but not Harpertown. I will start looking for an upgrade there.
Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Unless your putting this unit outside or away from the family, suggest you keep the Ghz down a little as clovertowns do get quite hot, especially in a 1U and 2U box. Those little fans will sound like its ready for blast off. I think I still have a pair of small heatsinks/fan if you need any. Collecting dust in a box somewhere downstairs. Learned real quick not to use something like this where the computer is in the living room. biggrin

The 2950 is in an outbuilding, away from the house. There is no way I would put any of the servers in the house, even the basement. They are just too loud. I have brought them in to do work on them in the basement in the winter and I can hear them upstairs. The 2950 is a 2U unit and there does appear to be sufficient air flow through the unit to keep everything cool. I will monitor the cpu temps to see how it is doing. I appreciate the offer of the heatsinks, will let you know, but I think the existing ones should be sufficient. I am still in the experimental phase with this unit.
Cheers

Thanks, Bearcat. I am using the 7770 as it seems to be one of the best in terms of price/performance ratio. Currently using 5 of them, best day so far was 923,000 coffee

923,000 hypnotized Holy crap, thats outstanding. 5 separate systems or multiple cards per cruncher? One of the draw backs of using server boards is only 1 x16 slot. Decided my next build will be a cheap quad with ability to hold 2 or 3 cards. Seeing some doing 4 GPU wu's per card here at WCG, thinking 2 will do depending on what gard to use. Not sure if I'll wait for the 8000 AMD series cards coming out by end of year or go for a 7900 series card. My 6950 is doing pretty good now but only one at a time. Are you able to crunch more than one wu at a time on your 7770? How long does one wu take to crunch? Appreciate the info.
