Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Just got back from Duluth. Drove through some of the worst freezing rain I've seen in a very long time. It is really bad on 35 from Duluth until you get to North Branch. What a horrible and long drive.
Yesterday it rained all day and this morning woke up to 12 degrees. Everything was frozen solid. Took some doing to get into the car.

Yikes! Glad you got back ok!

That reminds me of one time back in the mid-90's when my husband and I were driving back to Omaha after visiting my parents in Duluth at Christmas. Even though I was driving slowly because of ice, I still spun out on I-35 somewhere between Owatonna and Albert Lea. We were just very, very lucky that there weren't any cars right close to us. We ended up staying overnight in Albert Lea rather than trying to go on in the icy conditions -- were very happy to find a motel that would take us along with our two big German shepherd mixes.

Wishing all of you a safe and happy New Year.

Kate

That sounds like real white knuckle driving. Glad to hear you made it back safe and sound. Both of you.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Glad to hear you survived the drive. Not a good idea to travel in that kind of weather. Glad it's over for now. We got lucky not getting hit by the second wave around here. Northwestern/dakotas got hammered pretty bad. Just got to deal with the deep freeze now. Would rather have the snow.

How's the gpu crunching going? I have a ATI 5670 I'm trying to find a place to crunch with. Only single precision so limited. Prime grid looks promising but can find the requirements.

Hope everyone had a safe holiday!

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I had the first glitch on the Proliant server. It is not connected to the internet except for about every third or fourth day. I went to go download it and found it had errored out on about 25 jobs. All of them except one were listed as zero time. It had done the first several jobs OK. I restarted it and it downloaded another 4 days worth of jobs. Now this morning it appears to be fine for the last 24 hours. Running Linux Mint 7.1. Hopefully it will not hiccup again.

Downloaded again today. No further problems.

Cheers

GPU crunching right along. Got 642,482 points so far at gpu grid.
I think Collatz also will use singe precision cards. Let me know if you get it working. My son's computer has a 5770 which is also a single precision card. I would like to get something going on his also.

I don't want to go back to work after having 10 days in a row off. I think I may double my efforts in finding a new place to work this year. It's time to do so when you don't look forward to getting up in the morning. straight face

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I have had no trouble running Prime Grid and Collatz on a single-precision Nvidia card (would you believe, an Ion!?) Both projects have ATI applications, but I've never had an ATI card so can't vouch for them. I'll be interested to hear how it goes.

I am pumped! The parts for my new machine should be in sometime this week. It's a pretty modest machine by some of you folks' standards, but way better than anything I've had to crunch on so far. It will have an AMD Phenom II X4 610e processor, the new low-power Nvidia Fermi card (GeForce 430), and 8 Gb of RAM. It will be a power-sipper with a 65 W processor and a 49 W GPU. It will let me do some things for work on my home machine and will crunch WCG and GPUGrid whenever I'm not using it. Can't wait! :)

Best to all for 2011!

Kate

Still doing research on it. Apparently, will have to download an app from them for it to work. Should know by mid week.
Know what you mean about being away for awhile and don't care to go back. Been out since beginning of November dealing with appointments. Slow going. Not sure if I can go back to MnDot. To hard on my back. Should know by end of month what will be decided. Not much out there to go to though.
