I've had it with M$. I went and got an upgrade version of Windows 7 for my boys computer. First I decided to do a clean install. Well, with the upgrade version you can't do a clean install, and it tells me this after I'm finished installing it. So I had to reinstall win xp and then install win 7...again. It worked that time. The only problem now is Win 7 Home "Premium" edition only will use one physical processor!! My boys computer has 2 Physical processors. What a joke. I'm so sick of that company I can't believe they continue to grow. I will never buy another M$ product again as long as I live. angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry angry

Windows 7 only supports "upgrade installs" from Vista. If you have XP, you need to wipe it and do a fresh install.
See here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/upgrade-considerations.aspx
Upgrades also only work depending what flavor of Vista/7 you are going to/from.

I'm surprised the installer even let you attempt an upgrade of XP.

I've been running Windows Server 2008 and all my boxes for about a year now, so waiting for R2 on those. My VAIO laptop I bought in March came with Vista Home Premium x64 though, and last night I did an upgrade install with Windows 7 Ultimate x64. Worked perfectly. Only glitch is my keyboard brightness controls don't work, but I'm pretty sure I just need to install the Windows 7 drivers from Sony, going to do that tonight.

Yes you can upgrade from XP.
This is an addendum shoved in the packaging.

I'm going to put XP back on. Win 7 is bloatware. frustrated

Well, I guess we all have our own experiences and opinions. I've completed converting 6 of 8 machines from Win7 RC to the licensed copy of Win7 Home Premium. So far it has been flawless. I am keeping one XP SP3 machine and I've ordered parts for the other one to convert it from a Q6600 to an i7 920. I'm not a fan of Microsoft, but Win7 out performs Vista and is (for me) less cluttered and easier to use than XP. But as I always say, "Opinions may vary." biggrin Good luck Brink. coffee

Ahh, that is a pretty nasty process. Going from Vista it was literally:
1. Pop the disc in the drive
2. Accept license, choose Upgrade install, confirm yadda yadda
3. Play Forza Motorsport 3 for a few hours while it does it's thing and reboots a few times
4. At the end, asks for license key and it reconfirms your timezone for some reason.
5. Done. No reinstalling or backing up/restoring anything.

I tested it out on a VM first, that went lots quicker than the laptop, but both did the same thing.

FWIW, I've never been such an early adopter of MS stuff. I kept running XP and Server 2003 until well past the release of SP1 for both Vista and 2008, and even then my upgrade was mostly driven by the need for 64 bit, and I'd heard nothing but bad stuff about XP x64 at the time. Plus, games were starting to require DX10. :D

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

I do agree that it is much better than vista.
I just think everything that comes from that company is poorly coded and very overpriced.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Finally got my first system up and running with linux mint. A little bit of trial and error but got it runing with WCG in about 15 minutes once the system settled down and I got the updates done. Now I will just leave it run for bit and see how it does.

Cheers

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Never heard of linux mint. How long has that been out? Is it an off shoot of one of the distro's? I got to start looking at which one I want on my 8 core pc. Leaning toward ubunto or susi linux.

Re: Minnesota Crunchers

Mint is an off-shoot of Ubuntu and is a very good disto.

My advice is to stay away from Suse. I've been working with it at work and it's not very "new user friendly" IMHO.
Glad to hear you are going to run linux on your octo instead of windoz. cool

I saw it touted on a couple of other forums. It was supposed to be easy to install and easy to work with. So far so good. Like Brink says it is an offshoot of Ubuntu. This version is Gloria. If you can find the right screens it seems to be quite automated. I am poking around and learning on the fly.

Cheers
