Together we put together the equivalent of a 51,045,000+ AMD Athlon processor and ran it all day for WCG.

Together we put together the equivalent of a 51,045,000+ AMD Athlon processor and ran it all day for WCG. But, what do you think of the trend? It looks like people are leaving? I know the total keeps going up, but I'm wondering if members are treated like devices. Once you sign up, you're signed up for ever. |

Hi fj
----------------------------------------People aren't leaving they're still signing up. The reason for the seeming downtrend is the effect of the weekend. People who crunch work units on their work machines have to switch them off at the weekend. So don't worry people are still joining in this endevour. Over the last few days I seen the member numbers go 26644,27076,28153,28777,29310,29602,29812,30207 Other factors affect the points and results graphs. If a batch of so call Killer Work Units arrive lasting more than a day to crunch then effectively a smaller number of crunchers return results as the work units are still whiring around the insides of their machines. This is then seen as a spike a day of two later when those WU results finally make it to the stats. As a conseqence of the factors mentioned above its difficult to conclude, from a day with less results and points returned, that we are being deserted. From what I've seen of the graph and my friends and collegues out there recruiting I would say our best is certainly yet to come. Regards Dave |

Well, when looking at the Global Statistics, I always wonder how many Agents returned the previous days Results, but the average CPU Run Time per Result lets me make a rough estimate.
More cheerfully, I think that we had a brief PR blitz on 16 Nov 2004 to get us a working sample of users. Now we are getting the bugs out. I expect that there will be a more sustained publicity campaign once WCG feels ready for it. After all, we have to remember that word-of-mouth works both ways. We do not want to discourage hundreds of thousands of new users with unnecessary problems. |

Do I have it right that there's actually only ~ 16,700 pc's returning results? If you calculate # of pc's from either daily CPU time or from daily points, the number is ~ 16,700.
Of course, on any given day, many pc's won't return a result, hence will get no credit for cpu time or points. But, when the pc does return a result, it catches up on cpu time and points. So, over a large population, the totals should reflect cpu time and points based on the total actually involved - yes? If this is correct/accurate, the next point/question becomes obvious. But, before we go on, are the calculations/assumptions right? Thanks |

Seems right to me. If you look over the variations (Statistics History in Global Statistics) it becomes obvious that a number of computers are not run 24 hours a day, but I have no idea what the usage pattern really is or how many computers are no longer running the Agent after returning a result.

Fj
----------------------------------------that's correct. That's the equivalent number of PC's on all the time. If a 3 members contribute 8 hours of processing each then that will be 1 PC on for a whole day. It looks like the average number of PC's on for 24 hours over the first month of the project will be 12,000 a day Yesterday yhe equivalent of 17403 PC's were on for the whole day which is above the average of 12,000 therefore the trend is definitely upwards |

I have my PC on pretty much during the entire day (8am to midnight) running WCG in the background.
Right now, it is returning results every 40-50 hours or so, meaning about every two days. I'm sure there are thousands like that, meaning the number of PCs returning results in any given 24 hour period is about half the number of total registered devices. |
