Re: Statistics 'misleading'?

I have my PC on pretty much during the entire day (8am to midnight) running WCG in the background.

Right now, it is returning results every 40-50 hours or so, meaning about every two days.

I'm sure there are thousands like that, meaning the number of PCs returning results in any given 24 hour period is about half the number of total registered devices.

Sorry about the duplicate replies.

When originally replying, I kept getting a "timer already cancelled" error after clicking on the "Reply to Post" button.

Not exactly. When a pc does return results, it gets credit for all the work on the day the results are returned - so, given a large population, average points, cpu time should be very close to the average as if points/cpu time were calculated each day based on the amount of work completed - ie., independent of the whether WU's were actually completed.

As Dave Autumns mentions, my concern was whether the trend in the number of actual [i.e., actively participating] users is increasing. Since we can see data on only the top 5000 users, we can't tell how many may be no longer active.

I just keep worrying that, when this was announced, IBM said we could accomodate up to 10,000,000 users. At this point, that would seem an embarrassing statement. Like inviting 1000 people to a party and 3 show up. Oops.

On the other hand, if we're still in the debug stage, then fine.

David;
Great keep up the good work.
I really hope all this really results in a good benefit for all. I hope it is not the case of the company that has the deepest pockets gets the most direct use of the results. My computer time is donated free to benefit the many. I would like to think that the results are relatively free to any and all that ask for them.

I dont know why anyone but people at work would shut their machines off. My computer stays on 24/7 every day of the year.

It is always nice to be able to surf or go on wikipedia at any point in the day without having to start it up.

Now that my machine is running at a constant 98 degrees (with the WCG program running) it also makes for a great room warmer.

I have my computer running 4 hours a day, but due to its low workload i usually turn it off to conserve power. So I am very much unlike those who run computers 24/7..... i'm more like 4/7.....

How much power do you think it would use i dont see where it could use more than a couple light bulbs you could cut off your moniter and let the agent run

Every bit of contribution helps this cause

4/7 is just as welcome as 24/7 it just takes 6 of you to make up a 24/7

To parody a supermarket advert in the UK "Every little bit helps"

Keep on crunching yesterday the contribution to the effort was greater than ever

Happy New Year everybody

Having seen all these computing power estimates, i was wondering what it takes to complete this project.

In other words: How may results must be returned to complete the genome folding project.
