Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

Sekerob,

The kind of utility I was thinking of has been been around for several years, long before Cool 'n Quiet. I know very little about Cool 'n Quiet because none of my CPUs have it but perhaps that is the issue that slows scalewiz's Linux. It certainly deserves further investigation.

scalewiz,

Sorry, I have no personal experience with Linux on dual core, 965 chipset, PCI express and AC97 9 channel. Intuition tells me it will handle dual-core no problem and probably 965 too. Sound is one area where Linux seems to fall short.

EDIT ADDED: A little digging around shows me there are a few crunchers running Linux on dual-core, I suspect thousands could be turned up if I dug further. The trick to dual-core on Linux seems to be to install the proper kernel. It looks to me like kernel-smp-2.6.9-5.EL.i686 is for 32 bit and kernel-smp-2.6.9-5.EL.ia64 for 64 bit. I imagine your distro's installer might sense dual-core and install the right kernel for you. If not then Google turns up several places that provide RPM packages so I imagine your distro does too.

Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

this linux windows discussion seems a bit lost, i have 4 machines , 2 pentium 4's @ 3 ghz and an amd dualy 3800 and a laptop core duo 2.0ghz

the amd runs exclusivly linux, the rest windows xp. the pentiums are a bit older so every now and then i get bored and run them on a new linux distro just for interest.. ( i plug in a spare hdd and of i go, when i get bored again i unplug that and go back to windows...)

short version is the pentiums crunch pretty much the same regardless of distros, is a usefull exercise cos the p4's have identical specs ( almost - except for cd dvd differences but mobo cpu ram etc identical.)

the laptop does faah around the 4.5 hr mark, (per core) the amd dually about 4 hr (per core).. the pentiums about 9 tp 10 hrs per "HT" but that is another argument outside this thread LOL...

i am convinced that linux and windows generally perform more or less the same, there are big differences in boinc vs UD i have to say.. if i get bored again i may explore the HT vs non HT further ... it does make run time look better but that is somewhat artificial.. i am waffling , bfn

They certainly ought to behave the same. It is essentially the same code running on the same processor.

Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

Just as a reference:
P4 2.4GHz 512Mb DDR333 Ubuntu Linux 6.06 - does a faah in about 6-7hrs
P4 1.7GHz 256Mb DDR333 Ubuntu Linux 5.10 - faah 9-10hrs
Celeron 1.7GHz 768Mb DDR266 Win2k - HDC 4-5hrs

Sorry, couldn't call up any faah units from the cellery.

I've seen units go through all of those systems in far less and far more time.
