Hi, I tried to add WCG work through the BOINC client. I got the error messages:
08/26/2006 12:36:32 PM|World Community Grid|Process creation failed: The paging file is too small for this operation to complete. (0x5af) 08/26/2006 12:36:32 PM|World Community Grid|Process creation failed: The paging file is too small for this operation to complete. (0x5af) 08/26/2006 12:36:34 PM|World Community Grid|Process creation failed: The paging file is too small for this operation to complete. (0x5af) 08/26/2006 12:36:35 PM|World Community Grid|Unrecoverable error for result faah0769_bdb137_mx1hih_dry_09_0 (CreateProcess() failed - The paging file is too small for this operation to complete. (0x5af)) I guess my memory (98 MB) is too small, although if the message means exactly what it says, perhaps I could run faah if I increased my virtual memory? For now, I have suspended the project. It looks like it trashed a few WUs before I caught it. Ideally, if it wasn't going to work, it would be good for a test to prevent the download. So far, I can run einstein@home very nicely, and I let it run almost all the time I'm powered up, since memory usage is small and it doesn't interfere with anything. If I get another project running that uses more memory, I will need to use the "only run when idle" option. In that case, I would like to have it switch to einstein when it gets busy -- but I don't think BOINC supports that by project. If you have any suggestions, I'd like to try running more projects. BOINC has a lot of options now, but I think it could use more control over scheduling by project. Alternatively, maybe I need to learn how to use more of its features. |

The minimum RAM requirement for the FAAH project at WCG is 256 MB, 750 MB for the HDC project. Sometimes you can get away with a little less for FAAH but I'm pretty sure 98 just won't do, even if you increase your virtual memory. Actually, the operating system should automatically increase the virtual memory for you, unless you have set a maximum or free disk space is very low. I think the error message is misleading.
BOINC cannot be configured to automatically switch to a less demanding project when the system gets busy. You can manually force it by suspending demanding projects on the Projects tab but if you forget to Resume those projects later you may miss deadlines. You're probably better off using that computer to crunch less demanding projects like Einstein, SIMAP and TANPAKU where you can just let BOINC run and do its thing. Managing it manually the way I've described seems to cause no end of problems for some people and should be used VERY infrequently. |

G'day rhb
The FAQ says that FAAH needs a minimum of 250MB, it will run on less though. Try increasing your swap file to minimum 500MB, and see what happens. Just keep an eye on it though, don't want to trash too many wu's. |

Thanks for the explanations. I'm not even in the ballpark, so I won't consider fiddling with the swap file. I thought one of the WCG projects would run in 96MB, but apparently not or it doesn't have work now.
I hope faah parameters can be adjusted to prevent download on machines that are too small, so I can resume WCG when there is work here that my machine can do. I should be able to set it up manually if necessary, by only allowing WCG projects that I know my machine can run. |

rhb,
----------------------------------------How in the first place u got a WU to come to your machine when the initial handshake checks all system requirement parameters except the swapfile size is a riddle. The fiddling with the pagefile is a 1 minute action + a boot. (0.)98 somehow comes familiar to me! 2 places where the swap file is influenced: a. WCG Device profile for BOINC: Use no more than: 75% of total virtual memory. (is the default percent) b. The System control panel under performance tab. Think it needs a minimum of 500, pref, 1gb min to be able to handle HDC's too. 1 minute + a boot wont kill u to find out? Let us know ciao
