Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

scalewiz,

The CPU speed is determined by the buss speed AND the clock multiplier. The formula is:

CPU speed = buss speed X clock multiplier.

For example, if buss = 133 MHz and multplier = 10 then CPU speed = 1330 MHz = 1.3 GHz.
If buss = 133 MHz and multiplier = 4 then CPU speed = 532MHz.

The buss speed and multiplier are usually set in the BIOS. If they are set wrong then your CPU will run slow or will not run at all. It is possible that the buss speed and multiplier are set wrong in your BIOS. Now, you might be wondering, "If the buss speed and multiplier are incorrect then why did it run at normal speed on Windows?"

Well, there are utilities you can run in Windows to override the BIOS settings and increase your buss speed and multiplier. Some of those utilities can be configured to launch when Windows boots. Perhaps your BIOS settings are too low and perhaps a utility like that was booting when you ran Windows so your CPU ran full speed. Perhaps now that you've installed Linux that utility no longer boots so your system is using the BIOS settings which are too low.

Go into the BIOS and find the buss speed and multiplier settings. Write the numbers down and report back to us here. Or just do the math using the formula I gave you above and see what you come up with. It's a long shot but it's worth checking out and it's easy to do.

Italy calling....why if he ran WinXp before on it,
I will reinstall Windoze XP
, would the buss speed change on installing Linux? Do BIOSes not have an autodiscover? mine has an auto setting, which i speculate is driven by some instruction from the CPU at 19, and only throttles down if it cant boot.

Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

Sek,

As I said... perhaps the previous Windows install autostarted a utility that overrides the BIOS settings and adjusts the buss and multiplier up to the values required for 2 GHz CPU speed. Gigabyte provides a utility like that for their motherboards and I think Asus and others do too. There may be 3rd party utilities available as well.

With Linux installed the utility has probably been erased by the Linux install. Even if it did not get erased it won't run under Linux anyway. So now the BIOS settings are not being overridden, the buss and/or multiplier are too low and so the CPU is running less than 2 GHz, maybe only 500MHz.

Some BIOS may have an autodiscover but perhaps his is turned off. Also, the settings depend on jumpers on the motherboard. Sometimes all of that can be overridden by a utility running under the operating system. The only way to know what is happening for sure is to look in the BIOS settings, see what they say and make decisions based on that information.

The trap that scalewiz may fall into here is that if he has a dual boot setup and reboots Windows then of course the utility I am talking about, if it exists on his disk, will launch and tweak the buss and/or multiplier up and scalewiz will think, incorrectly, that the fault lies with Linux.

I'm putting all my posts in bold font now. Does it help? Or is it worse than standard font at your end?

Dear Dagorath, if you would add a colour to your font, I'm sure some will be pleazed, else i think, that forum etiquettes consider it a form of shouting....with ClearType feature it though is counter productive....it becomes blurry!

Profuse Apologies for overlooking that Windows utilities part.....always was thinking these things had a throttle down function and not a throttle up. My sincerest apology for doubting your correctness.

OUCH ! !

My sincere apologies to the group for my lack of patience. System just died...apparently a "hard drive controller failure".

Again, many thanks to all those who so willingly responded to my plea for help.

Sek,

Opps! Sorry, I didn't mean to yell. I have always considered using ALL CAPS LIKE THIS to be yelling but I didn't think bold font would be considered yelling. My apologies to all, I was just trying to make my posts more readable.

The standard font is OK on the white background but when the post falls on the gray background the standard font is terrible and the bold font helps a lot here. Maybe I need to look at my Forum Preferences again?

You are welcome to pick apart my posts any time you wish. I am here to learn as well as to teach on those rare occassions when the truth has managed to penetrate my thick skull.

sad You mean the Linux box died? Well, that might explain the slow speed. Don't worry about the lack of patience, we've all been there ourselves.

Anyway, sorry to hear you lost a unit. crying

Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

Yes, it was the Linux box that died. This system sat faithfully at work for about 3 years, and was taken out in favor of a new, faster one. Now I
understand why we needed faster.

It gets worse...new hard drive didn't fix the boot problem. I guess it went on down to the motherboard level. Cable change didn't work either.

Not to quit though...I'll use the good components out of the system to get another one going...crunch, crunch, crunch.

Thanks to all for the help, and especially to everyone on the grid who simply donates their time and bucks for these most worthwhile causes.

Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

Found this snippet on the German SIMAP forum....pass it thru the universal translator. The cruncher was also experiencing severe speed reduction under Linux. He then disabled what is referred to as the C&Q function (cool & quiet), which fixed the issue. His conclusion was that Linux was not increasing the clock speed when the CPU was put under load......the Windows Util that Dagorath described?

Evil or Very Mad
Das ganze hat mich viel Zeit und WUs gekostet, aber nun bin ich schlauer, vielen dank für eure Hilfe. Wink

Re: Windows is 5 times faster than Linux running BOINC ? ? ? ?

Another controller & hard drive, now I am back up and running on this one. Going to complete some setup (try to install a modem for receiving faxes) and then will reinstall boinc.

Anyone around know if Linux will run on dual core, 965 chipset, PCI express, AC97 9 channel sound, etc?
