Protein Is Involved With Colon Cancer Cell's Ability To Invade Other Cells

Understanding how the protein km23-1 enables in the spread of colon cancer may lead to new treatments for the disease, according to researchers at Penn State College of Medicine.

Previous research shows that km23-1 is involved in the movement of cancer cells and in the control of specific proteins at the leading edge of moving cells. Kathleen Mulder, professor of biochemistry and molecular biology, who discovered the protein, now says km23-1 is used in the cancer cell's ability to move out of a tumor in the early stages of invasion..."

Melanoma Recurs After 10 Years In Over 6% Of Patients

The recurrence of melanoma skin cancer is more common 10 or more years after initial treatment than experts previously thought, occurring in over one in 20 patients, a new study showed.

However, the research, which was published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons, found that these patients tend to live longer after their melanoma returns than patients whose cancer recurs in the first three years..."

A Double-Edged Sword: How Oncogenes And Tumor Suppressor Genes Can Contribute To Chromosomal Instability

Cells rely on an intricate network of signaling pathways to govern a number of processes ranging from tissue repair to programmed cell death. De-regulation of signaling pathways is a hallmark of cancer and responsible for driving tumor formation.

Aneuploidy, defined as an abnormal chromosome number, is a distinct feature commonly observed in most solid tumors that arises from errors in cell division during mitosis. While some tumors maintain a stably aneuploid genome, many cancer cells persistently mis-segregate their chromosomes during mitosis, a phenomenon known as chromosomal instability (CIN). CIN is thought to drive the genomic re-shuffling that enables cells to acquire new phenotypes such as drug resistance and is intimately associated with loss of mitotic fidelity..."

Cardiac Hormone-Related Inflammatory Pathway Linked To Tumor Growth

A cardiac hormone signaling receptor abundantly expressed both in inflamed tissues and cancers appears to recruit stem cells that form the blood vessels needed to feed tumor growth, reports a new study by scientists at the University of South Florida Nanomedicine Research Center.

The research may lead to the development of new drugs or delivery systems to treat cancer by blocking this receptor, known as natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPRA).

The findings appeared online recently in the journal Stem Cells..."

Vitamin C Influences Gene Activity In Stem Cells

A study of mouse stem cells reveals that vitamin C may play a role in their health by influencing the switching on and off of genes. The researchers suggest this could have an important effect on the development of mice, humans and other animals, and finding out more about the underlying mechanisms could improve our understanding of in vitro fertilization, cancer and adult stem cells..."

Physicist Suggest That Cancer May Be A Result Of A Default Cellular 'Safe Mode'

Death rates from cancer have remained largely unchanged over the past 60 years. A physicist is trying to shed more light on the disease with a very different theory of its origin that traces cancer back to the dawn of multicellularity more than a billion years ago..."

When The Body Turns Traitor And Aids And Abets The Spread Of Cancer

The very system that is meant to protect the body from invasion may be a traitor. These new findings of a study, led by investigators at the Research Institute of the McGill University Health Centre (RI-MUHC), reveal that infection-fighting white blood cells play a role in activating cancer cells and facilitating their spread to secondary tumours. This research, published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation has significant implications for both the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

"We are the first to identify this entirely new way that cancer spreads," says senior author Dr. Lorenzo Ferri, MUHC director of the Division of Thoracic Surgery and the Upper Gastrointestinal (GI) Cancer Program. "What's equally exciting is medications already exist that are being used for other non-cancer diseases, which may prevent this mechanism of cancer spread or metastasis." According to Dr. Ferri, the next steps are to validate if these medicines will work for the prevention and treatment of cancer metastasis, and then to determine the optimal timing and dosing..."

New Evidence For The Genetic Bases Of Liver Cancer

The Asian Cancer Research Group (ACRG), an independent, not-for-profit company in collaboration with BGI, the world's largest genomics organization, and The University of Hong Kong (HKU), jointly announced the publication of findings from a study of recurrent mutations in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), one of the most deadly cancers worldwide, in the international journal Genome Research . The study provides new insights into potential therapeutic intervention strategies for this common form of liver cancer..."

Ubiquitin's Potential For Treating Diseases

A tiny protein called ubiquitin - so named because it is present in every cell of living things as dissimilar as hollyhocks and humans - may hold the key to treatment for a variety of diseases from Parkinson's to diabetes. The protein, found in all eukaryotes (organisms with membranous cells), was considered unimportant when it was described in 1975. But scientists now know ubiquitin takes many different forms and is important in basic cellular processes, from controlling cells' circadian clocks to clearing away the harmful build-up of cells found in cancer and other diseases..."
