Depression 'cuts cancer survival'
Depression can damage a cancer patient's chances of survival, a review of research suggests. The University of British Columbia team said the finding emphasised the need to screen cancer patients carefully for signs of psychological distress. The study, a review of 26 separate studies including 9,417 patients, features in the journal Cancer. It found death rates were up to 25% higher in patients showing symptoms of depression.... |

New drug 'can treat more cancers'
A promising new drug may be able to treat more types of cancer than first thought. PARP inhibitors have shown early promise for treating cancers linked to BRCA gene mutations, including some breast and ovarian cancers. But Breakthrough Breast Cancer research suggests they might also kill cancer cells with a faulty PTEN gene, found in some skin, womb and colon tumours..... |

Dogs Get Skin Cancer Too
Skin Tumors are Most Common Tumor Found in Dogs You might not give much thought to dog skin cancer, because your loyal companion is covered with hair and protected from the sun. But you should know that skin tumors, which may be cancerous, are the most common tumors found in dogs. Fortunately, when caught early, many cases of dog skin cancer can be treated successfully. Not all varieties of dog skin cancer are caused by sun exposure, but sun damage to the skin can be a causative factor. All dogs have certain areas, such as the nose and the pads of the feet, where there is no hair to shield sensitive skin from the sun. Additionally, pooches with light-colored or thin coats are more susceptible to sun damage over their entire bodies.... |

Lilly: Alimta improved survival in lung cancer
Eli Lilly and Co. said Monday a clinical trial showed lung cancer patients treated with Lilly's drug Alimta lived about three months longer than those who received the best available care. Alimta is used as a "maintenance therapy" for patients whose disease had not progressed after chemotherapy. In a study involving 663 patients, Lilly said patients treated with Alimta and best available care lived for an average of 13.4 months, and those treated with best care and a placebo lived for an average of 10.6 months... |

New Type Of Genetic Change Identified In Inherited Cancer
Duke University Medical Center and National Cancer Institute scientists have discovered that a novel genetic alteration – a second copy of an entire gene – is a cause of familial chordoma, an uncommon form of cancer arising in bones and frequently affecting the nervous system... |

Cancer related
3 Americans Share 2009 Nobel Medicine Prize Americans Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak win Nobel medicine prize In a part from the article reads this The prize-winners' work set the stage for research suggesting that cancer cells use telomerase to sustain their uncontrolled growth. Scientists are studying whether drugs that block the enzyme can fight the disease. In addition, scientists believe that the DNA erosion the enzyme repairs might play a role in some illnesses... Congrats to all three and the very best of success |

Sweet Leaf Tea Extract Shows Real Promise in Preventing Cancer Recurrence
----------------------------------------Preliminary research shows that the extract prevents remaining cancer cells from triggering new cancer blood vessel formation and growth in new tumors. One of the goals of the project is to spin it off into human clinical investigations of the extract as a cancer-preventative agent. A great challenge in doing this is to standardize the extract so that the batch-to-batch variations are assessed and controlled. This is especially challenging given the natural variations of botanical materials and the nature of mixed compounds in a singleleaf extract compared to single-entity drugs, such as aspirin. Telemerase is the holly grail of cancer research and immortality in my opinion. The hayflick phenominium is where mortal cells go through 50-70 cell divisions before senesence. During cell division each cell in mortal cells has at the end of the telomeres one side which is longer than the other due to the function of the enzyme that uses one half of the DNA to form the other half. A differrent enzyme then comes along cutting off that extra dna. With each cell division the telomeres become shorter eventually preventing further division. Telemorase comes along and restores after each cell division that other part of DNA resulting in no shortening of the telomeres and immortality, essentially. Cancer cells and germ line have telemerase.

Skin Cancer Can Be Inherited: Studies
Want to reduce your risk of skin cancer? Wear sun screen, of course. But two new studies suggest that choosing your relatives carefully could also be helpful. One found that having an identical twin with melanoma increased a person's own risk of developing the disease much more than having a fraternal twin with this type of skin cancer. The other found that having a sibling or parent with one of several different types of non-melanoma skin cancer increased risk as well........ |
