AMD64

So far, two projects have added support for x86-64: SETI sends the x86 application and SIMAP, a true x86-64 application. Would you consider supporting the platform x86_64-pc-linux-gnu or x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu similarly?

Re: AMD64

U may get an answer today which probably will go along the lines off: Too few systems to justify.....cost/benefit ratio. Meantime, here's a fresh article at Start64

I'm currently very happy .... all software matured, running on my 32bit P4 .... if i switch, a few years ahead or for reasons of force majeure, than only, if more User software is available to make it pay......

PS There are earlier posts on the X64 question such as:
64bit rosetta?
Re: 64-bit and Multicore support????

Key to search is "64 bit" (including quotation marks)

Chess960 now supports AMD64 with a native Linux application too. wink

32bit emulation work little good, but you don't use extended math register, for example...

Indeed, but at least my computers which run the 64-bit client are able to run more projects, even if a plain 32-bit application. wink

Re: AMD64

The simple answer is that high precision calculations are not needed for these biochemical applications.

A google search for "grid quadruple precision" yields some interesting applications.

Feynman@home is a new project that needs quadruple precision for more precise results.

http://acpp.in2p3.fr/cgi-bin/twiki/bin/view/Feynman/WebHome

I don't know whether it is ready to go yet. An attempt to attach in BOINC says that it is unavailable. There is still some good reading over there.

Another result from the google search even mentions octuple precision.

Re: AMD64

FWIW, running two instances of the client, one the 32-bit client, the other, the 64-bit client, on the same 4-core system, but limiting each client to 2 cores, I can compare the relative performance of 32-bit and 64-bit SIMAP's HMMER: the 64-bit version is about 7% faster.

By enabling vectorization (supported by default on AMD64), the SIMAP developers observed other 8% improvement.

Bottom line: porting the project application to AMD64 has the potential to improve performance by 15%!

Re: AMD64

The key word is "potential". We will only find out what performance increase is possible for the WCG projects when the WCG grid techs can make time to port the science applications.

64bit is still remarkably uncommon. Even if it were, we can find 7% in other ways. Sadly, we have limited time for optimisation. WCG can't afford to play the game of diminishing returns.
