Whats the best method to get your company to sign up??

I'm obviously not the director of IT... but I work for a Biotech comapny and think that when most people spend there time in the lab their computer could be doing something... So how can you sell this to the managers / is it safe?? (not being a computer boffin)

Cheers,

Aleed

WCG are always happy to give extra help to large institutions who want to set up the grid on hundreds or thousands of computers.

You may find the Partner Presentation useful in explaining the grid and how it works.

Is it safe? That's a very important question, but the answer is complicated. It's as safe as such things can be. It is considerably safer than any other public grid, since it has a dedicated staff to manage it, and is backed by IBM. The servers are housed in a secure datacenter. Server communications are encrypted and all files are virus checked.

There are a few large organisations already running the grid (including IBM of course). While there are risks, they are definitely manageable.

Good luck promoting WCG to your employers.

Re: Whats the best method to get your company to sign up??

Hello Aled Charles,
Yes, it's safe. Start off by reading About Us - Become a Partner - Partner Presentation. Slide 5 gives some bullet points about security. The 22 November 2004 issue of Grid Today has an interview with IBM's vice president of Grid computing, Al Bunshaft, which discusses the security review that IBM gave the UD client used by the World Community Grid before okaying it for use on IBM's corporate computers: http://www.gridtoday.com/04/1122/104295.html

Before IBM okayed BOINC for use on the World Community Grid, BOINC had to add SSL encryption.

You can use the Contact Us ( http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/viewContactUs.do ) to make any inquiries of the staff.

I have been keeping a list of status updates and news releases here: http://www.worldcommunitygrid.org/forums/wcg/viewthread?thread=4925#51997

Hope this helps.
Lawrence
