Re: AMD64

64bit is still remarkably uncommon.

15% of new Linux installations are 64 bits and the installed base is far larger than Mac/x86. wink

Re: AMD64

All the effort, then the gain posted by someone named Augustines alias emenezes who's been going around the fora.
FWIW, running two instances of the client, one the 32-bit client, the other, the 64-bit client, on the same 4-core system, but limiting each client to 2 cores, I can compare the relative performance of 32-bit and 64-bit SIMAP's HMMER: the 64-bit version is about 7% faster.

the guy below confirms 'we could tickle a few extra percent out'... not impressed...park this until something material comes out.

Noe, wieso solltest Du da was verpasst haben?

Re: AMD64

So far, two projects have added support for x86-64: SETI sends the x86 application and SIMAP, a true x86-64 application. Would you consider supporting the platform x86_64-pc-linux-gnu or x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu similarly?

Chess960 now supports AMD64 with a native Linux application too. wink

HashClash now supports AMD64 with a 32-bit Linux application... wink

HashClash now supports AMD64 on Windows with a 32-bit application... wink

Guess what? Leiden Classical now supports AMD64 on Linux with a 32-bit application. wink

Re: AMD64

emenezes a.k.a. Augustine.....

WCG packages Life Sciences for large volume crunching as its mission.....not looking for specials represented by 0.0x% of the population.

I'v promised myself a x-mas present of some dual core (x32) laptop..... the benefits of x64 are still extremely meager in everyday life and then over-stretching to spend loads of money on 7% gain?

ciao

Oh, and its going to be a Mac dancing

Re: AMD64

Hi Augustine,

Believe on one other forum, was it D@H or something your periodic update of the same message was qualified as spam?

WCG has no control of the design of the science software, and by now we know that the benefit is somewhere in the range of 7-15%, on an x64 participation of few percentage points..... it does not pay to convert, let alone do it for multiple OSses. I'm sure that if WCG measures a substantial complement, and they know exactly what the complement is, they'd message the project developers to incorporate it in their programming.

cheers

Re: AMD64

As far as I know, WCG doesn't need to develop new 64-bit versions of the software they run in order to support 64-bit platforms. All they need to do is to distribute the 32-bit version when a request from such a plaform arrives instead of simply dropping an "unknown platform" message.

Perhaps they'll be loosing that potential for improvement that was already mentioned in the thread, but at least they would support quite a few of us who want to contribute to the project but can't because of this issue.

cool Re: AMD64

FYI, the new x86-64 Linux client, version 5.8.11, can be found at boinc_5.8.11_x86_64-pc-linux-gnu.gz. Again, the x64 Windows client, version 5.4.11, by Crunch3r, at boinc_5.4.11_windows_amd64.zip.

For more information, see BoincStats Forum.

Re: AMD64

The following platforms will now be sent the 32 bit Linux application:

x86_64-pc-linux-gnu
x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu
i386-pc-linux-gnu
i386-portbld-freebsd

We will periodically scan the log files for other platforms that would be compatible.
